Stumbled on this site by accident the other day after my car coughed and refused to run on tickover. Called out the RAC who diagnosed leaking exhaust manifold. He explained this by telling me that the exhaust pipe wasn't getting enough gas on tickover but once it was revved to about 1200rpm it was happy. To prove is theory he sprayed the top of the manifold sheild with duck oil which immediately started to burn off thereby proving his theory!. Armed with this mis - information I phoned the mechanic who looks after the car for me. After he picked himself up off the floor after falling off his greasy chair laughing, he told me to bring it down first thing and he will look at it. Took it down first thing, he opened the bonnet, reconnected a pipe under the thottle housing, shut bonnet all in 20 seconds! and that included a few choice remarks about the rac. The upshot is the car is now running sweet as a nut again and it hasn't cost me a penny.
