I have changed the heater bypass valve for a new one and have removed the thermostat to flush the engine the water runs back thro the engine from the thermostat housing and comes out through the top of the radiator

Hi can anyone help? i have a 1997 2.0 omega 16v the temp gauge is reading maximum after idling for a short time i suspect it is a temperature sensor/switch, is there any way to check it other than replacing it? also the heater is not working only blowing cold air any suggestions? Everything else on the cooling system seems to be working the fan kicks in to cool the radiator but i have no idea what temperature it is coming on at.The water doesnt seem to be boiling the radiator is cool(ish) to the touch. The gauge seems to come up steadily to about 95 then shoots up into the red any help gratly appreciated ;D >:(
