Hi can anyone help? i have a 1997 2.0 omega 16v the temp gauge is reading maximum after idling for a short time i suspect it is a temperature sensor/switch, is there any way to check it other than replacing it? also the heater is not working only blowing cold air any suggestions? Everything else on the cooling system seems to be working the fan kicks in to cool the radiator but i have no idea what temperature it is coming on at.The water doesnt seem to be boiling the radiator is cool(ish) to the touch.The gauge seems to come up steadily to about 95 then shoots up into the red any help gratly appreciated

Sounds like you have a blocked rad and a busted HBV  :-/

Either an air lock of the thermostat it stuck shut.

I have changed the heater bypass valve for a new one and have removed the thermostat to flush the engine the water runs back thro the engine from the thermostat housing and comes out through the top of the radiator

Then, probably an airlock or stuck thermostat as W666 says

Are you getting the apparent overheating with the thermostat out?

Do you know when the water pump was last changed?

If that were failing to circulate enough volume, it might give your symptoms, I think.

Hi again thanks for the suggestions its not the thermostat as it isnt in how do i get rid of an airlock and could it be in the heater matrix cheers

Fill the system and leave the cap off the coolant tank, run the engine with the heating/climate on full/hot. Let it warm up while squeezing radiator and matrix hoses (CAREFUL WITH YOUR FINGERS) and keep an eye on the temp gauge.

Also try back flushing the raidator and heater matrix

If you have got zero circulation even with the thermostat out it sound too fundamental to be an air lock.

It sounds like the impeller has fallen off the pump shaft to be honest.

I have had this happen on commercial heating pumps but I didn't think that vauxhalls were prone to it :-/

as far as i know the water pump was changed with the cambelt about 15 months ago just before i bought it. and the apparent overheating happens with the thermostat out

A simple test for the waterpump...... take the thermostat housing off, fill it as full as you can get it then start up. You'll get a good gush until the supply runs out. If no gush then the water pump impella has come off as Andy says.
