Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Display fried?
« on: 14 February 2010, 21:35:42 »
I previously posted regarding my info display dying I finally got round to having a proper look, turns out display was working but not lit up (noticed writing on it in bright sunlight).

Turns out it was a duff bulb causing a short circuit which was swapped out but now having bigger problems with it...

The bulbs are very dull, in darkness I could barely see the writing.
When ignition is off (key out and doors locked) bulbs are still lit, nothing can be seen on screen only noticed as I still had display out of dash trying to get it working.
Only Stopwatch, Speed & Distance functions work, everything else just displays "F"

Does anyone have any ideas? could understand bulbs being nackered due to previous short circuit may be causing dullness but no ideas about blubs staying on or the "F"

not bulbs, they were recently replaced as 1/2 had died.

there is nothing on screen at all, even with all bulbs dead should still be able to make it out slightly.

lights on or off dont make a difference, fiddled with dimmer again no difference.

took dash and unit out to check any obvious faults... nothing I can see, its just as if there is no power going to the unit.

does anyone know what pins supply power feed so i can shove multimeter on it?

I lost my dash lights last night when traffic master loom decided to short itself out so may be a sign of a short elsewhere.

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Re: MAJOR electrical problem
« on: 21 September 2009, 16:57:11 »
Well it turned out not to be too major

The radio loom plugs into another loom which disapears into the car then it plugs into the radio, it was this loom inbetween which had cooked

The live wire was practically bare where it burnt off the insulation, the wires had a few nicks in them so i think it had shorted out

I've cut this loom off and pluged the other loom straight into radio which works fine and no difference, any idea what this other loom was for? phone or preamp?

Weird thing though I removed radio fuse and hooked up multimeter to see ampage of radio yet it came up as 0, removed multimeter and radio still works (no fuse in) cant see that the fuse has been shorted.

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / MAJOR electrical problem
« on: 20 September 2009, 21:51:52 »
My omega has just had a major electical failure.

Was driving home and stereo went off a few times then came back on. Then got 2 minutes from home (luckily) and stereo went off again but didnt come back on, looked down and the dash lights where off (trip computer was still lit up) then noticed smoke bellowing from the airbag.

Something has definately burnt out (smoke was a small hint) stinks of burnt plastic.

Weird thing is everything minus dash lights & stereo still works (windows, lights, locking, etc...)

Is it likely loom has burnt out? or is there a ray of hope before I take a can of petrol to it and finish the job?

I dont seem to have double lock or alarm.

Am I correct in all omega's have a double press on lock to double lock? sure my old one used to but tbh had so many cars over the years may be wrong.

Definately no alarm, the switch flashes when you press it to disable ultrasonics but thats only time it ever lights up.

Tried leaving window open, locked and left 30secs then popped locks from inside and it just unlocked.

Agreed. I don't think it even fires up to prime the system until cranking is detected. If you're seeing power at the pump without cranking the engine (and 10-11v is suspiciously low) I smell a rat.

mis-wording on my part, the power was whilst cranking, not just with ignition on.

think it was 10-11v because the battery has been under some strain the last couple of days constantly cranking with no reward :(

Success!!!

Turns out to be a dodgy connection on the plug which connects to the metal plate.

Reconnected all the fuel lines and manually ran 2 wires to a battery booster and spun pump that way, fired up first time

plugged back in, still wouldnt fire

pierced a small hole in top of wire before plug and checked continuity between wire and pump ... nothing

bent pins a bit, jiggled wiring in plug ... got continuity

turned key ... started first time

trouble is not sure if it is the plug itself or the socket, both of which i will presume are awkward to source / replace and theres no easy way to replace with own connectors :(
