Update and Thanks from WAL to Grumpy, Perplexer, Tunnie, Wag [et al].

Thanks first to Grumpy and Perplexer for your brill postings on How To Clean Your 2.0L IACV and Breather Jet and  Cleaning the throttle valve assembly Omega 2.0 16V.  I can report I did both this weekend [even without a torque wrench] and it all went like clockwork.  The valve was blocked Grumpy and getting’ to it was made much easier by stripping the throttle body.  After I'd finished the engine was racing [2000 rpm] for a bit an' give me a bit of a fright but it settled down quickly and I think it was probably due to the engine management thingy needing to get on top of things after the maintenance - eh?  It's now ticking over at about 600rpm - is that OK?  While I was at it I changed the water coolant too using the red antifreeze and got rid of all the rust – thanks Tunnie. My MIG [1994 2.0 GLS] has only 67,500 mls on her [59,500 when I bought her end of April this year] and I don’t think she’s had much servicing on her after the initial ones.  After this weekend I’m keen to have a go at anything you guys might suggest I should check and do next; so please let me have any thoughts/advice etc. Of course I’ll be readin’ the OOF postings – [beginning to get the hang of it (forum) a bit now].  I haven’t done the paper clip test yet Grumpy and that’ll be next along with those back door nylon adjusters when I get some time an’ then there’s the advisories that came with the MOT – front discs, oil mist on rear shocks [it was never like this with the 1.9TDI 405 PUGs – just oil and water – but I’m beginning to see the attraction [?addiction] in all this. The exhaust I had done at a silencer place – for £80 they welded a new flexible joint onto the CAT.  Had to take it back after the wife brought it home – lousy vibration when stopped [at say the lights etc] while in drive.  They had another go at improving it but it’s still not as smooth as it used to be oh an’ the CATs blowin’ a little now too.  Like you lot say it’s best done yourself. Thanks again lads! WAL  8-)
PS – some of you might be wonderin’ what happened to the 2001 2.2cd I was supposed to be getting’ it’s a long story [still ongoin’ in fact] an’ I’ll post it ASA I can get round to it.  I’m sure you’ll be interested n’ I can imagine already your up-rolled eyes, knowing wry smiles an’ I expect a few  ‘just as we said’s.’ I’m learnin’!
Now where do I post ths????:o

Hello,
Sorry for the late response - I hadn't understood the notification message thingy - so didn't know you'd posted more info.  I too have been busy and haven't had time to look at sortin' this out yet but it sounds like you've given me /us the solution.  As soon as I've had a go [could be another week at least] I'll be in touch.
 [smiley=dankk2.gif]again - WAL  :)  I'm beginning to really appreciate this forum! :y

Hello,
I'm a just joined newbie and don't know what the problem is but I too have the same problem with my 1994 2.0 16v GLS.  Both my back doors will not open from the outside.  As with yours the electrics work fine and the inside handles work. I put my hand inside the door where the mechanism is and felt around and by  pushing just a tiny amount in the same direction that the outer door handle moves the inner workings the door opened.  It suggested to me that something has worn like a washer, perhaps plastic, or a plate has worn and/or a bit has dropped off / out of the assembly and so the mechanism isn't moving as far as it should to activate the door lock.  As I said I'm a newbie and know nowt so if anyone has the answer please let me/us know [as soon as poss because I'm hopefully selling soon to get my newer one].
Regards

Cheers Chaps,
With the courage/confidence gained by your knowledgeable support I just rang the the dealer and spoke again to the mechanic.  He told me the gearbox was off; that the fly wheel had come loose and that he was just waitin' for the bolts from Vx.  He said he'd understand if I didn't want to go ahead and said I could have my money back if I wanted  adding that it'd be a pity tho' because everything that needed doin' had now been done.  I recalled what you all said; thanked him for the offer and told him I'd already decided that I'd had enough.  He asked me to call the dealer when he's back from holiday, Thursday am, an' he'll sort it out.
So,  [smiley=dankk2.gif]again you lot - I'll keep you posted. - WAL :)

Thanks chaps!
I think that's what I wanted to hear - you want to believe the best - I mean how do they exist if they don't look after the customers - but it's my gut feelin' too.  For some reason [??these guys are good at makin'??] you feel obliged once you've paid your deposit.  Maybe they're not so bad and this is just one of those things - I'll soon find out - eh?
Good idea about the tradin' standards people - I think I've got pretty good cause to pull out of the deal.
[smiley=dankk2.gif]again - WAL  :)  PS - I'll let you know how it turns out.

Omega General Help / Omega Purchase Problem/s
« on: 07 September 2009, 20:37:04 »
Hello,
Some of you will recall that I should have picked up my new [to me] 2001 2.2 cd saloon last Saturday. The dealer, about 35 miles away in Barnsley, had taken my deposit and promised to do a few jobs e.g. cam belt [thanks forum for the advice re the tensioners]; correct a steering wobble [salesman said wheels out of shape due to standing]; exhaust repair and/or replace; deal with a ?misfire / ditherin’ when setting off– salesman said probably needs some new leads or somethin’[again thanks forum for the advice] + Full service and MOT, oh an’ some ‘chips-away.’  Me and the missus went to pick it up and asked about the tensioners i.e. had they / it been replaced with the belt.  Salesman on holiday – mechanic said he hadn’t changed the tensioner/s because they had been changed at 40K along with the cam belt! ??? How did he know [I asked] – because they weren’t GM parts [tensioners] he replied.  Why had he changed the belt if done at 40K?  Because I’d stipulated it and the salesman had OK’d it. ???
The wobble?  Mechanic said trackin’ was miles out and since he’d done it he couldn’t detect any wobble.  I told him I thought it odd that I had never noticed it ‘pullin’ to the left’ on the test drive despite letting go of the steering wheel, even when braking.
Exhaust had been replaced on one side [you can guess which] along with the back box.  Mechanic confirmed the cat and associated pipes had been checked during MOT and there was no problem detected.  Any advisers on MOT?  Mechanic advised only 1 brake pipe, going to back end, showing signs of corrosion – ‘cleaned up and copper-slipped’. Oh!
Some ‘chips-away’ work done but not everywhere and car definitely not prepped for customer pick up.  Like the man said it’s an eight-year-old car [n’only £1595].
Undeterred I [missus attached] took it for a test drive – ditherin' at take-off? -  gone! – pullin’ to left [a lot]?- wobble [felt thru steering wheel – a bit better but still there? On a short by-pass I took it up to 50mph – not bad acceleration but not really much, if any, better then my 94 2.0 GLS?  Up to 60mph + couldn’t quite make out if the amount of engine noise warranted the speed attained but as I took my foot off the accelerator and slowed down an awful  [?] reverberating noise became apparent.  Repeated performance = same again so drove back to garage [1/4 mile or so]. My immediate thought was that the other half of the exhaust had give up.  Back at the garage checked the exhaust – not that!  About to take mechanic for a test drive to show but the noise appeared just as I started her up.  Bonnet up and accelerator blipped – noise apparent with each blip and sounded as if it was getting worse.  Mechanic all over it but could not find fault – took off auxiliary belt – noise still there when engine just revved – took off cam belt cover – all looked OK – at least mechanic still couldn’t say what was the cause.  Jacked her up – good check underneath- still no show.  Me and missus went for brunch – give mechanic a bit of space – came back about an hour later he'd still not found the fault but advised he thought it could be the tensioner – that fitting the new cam belt could have somehow caused the problem “cos they’re spring loaded an’ it might be that” he advised ???
Agreed action;- too late to get part today will order Monday – fix and give me a call.
Monday [today] – no call from mechanic so I called him.  Mechanic advised he had ordered a cam belt kit but had not been able to fix her [or confirm fault] due to supplier sending wrong part.  He’ll obtain right one tomorrow and give me a call when done.  I reminded him that on Saturday I’d pointed out that the wobble was still a problem and that the tracking was now definitely pulling to the left and that these [2] needed to be done before I would pick her up.  Mechanic advised he had no time to worry about those until he’d “sorted this one out.” Oh, he assured me that the previous owner had been in today and assured him that there had never been a problem before he traded it in.??
Sorry for the saga but it all wouldn’t mean much without the facts.  I’d appreciate it if any of you have any thoughts what the problem could be or advice as to what I / you would do.
Thanks for readin’ all this - WAL   :o :question :question :question

Omega General Help / Missing / flat spot - when setting off
« on: 04 September 2009, 17:57:41 »
Hello,
By now you'll have got the message I'm gettin' a 2.2. cd tomorrow.  One of the things I noticed when I test drove it, and the dealer said he'd fix, was that when pressing the accelerator to set off there seemed to be a ?dithering before the power picked up. The dealer agreed that he's noticed it too and advised that it was probably the spark plug leads.  These have now been replaced and the dealer's partner says, over the phone, that he never noticed the dithering when he tried it recently after the leads change i.e. that the leads have cured the problem.  Does all this sound feasible?  I've been readin' here about the IACU thingy probs and just wondered.  Another job, done before the deal is finalised tomorrow, was the exhaust.  That's been replaced too - could that have caused the dithering? I didn't notice any loss of power at speed - tho I only took it 60 or so.  Grateful for any help / comments.  :-? WAL
