Omega General Help / Re: Water Leak from back of engine
« on: 13 June 2012, 23:34:42 »
Thanks for all the advice guys.  :y

I'll be able to take a closer look at the weekend.  Only a few short trips to do between now and then.

Have to say I wasn't expecting to be using the heaters in mid-June!  :o

The other thing is I'm looking to change the old dear for an oil burner in the next few weeks, so the gunk will be someone else's problem.  It's probably going to be inherited by the guy who put it in!  :P

I'll try and remember that :y - one step at a time though.  I'm not the most proficient with the spanners  :-\

Omega General Help / Water Leak from back of engine
« on: 12 June 2012, 23:35:39 »
The Elite sprung a leak last week whilst sat in the car park at work - only just noticed before jumping in and driving home like I stole it.  Got her up on a ramp but we couldn't tell exactly where it was coming from somwhere at the rear of the engine.  :(

K-seal seemed to do the job at first but she's still losing somewhere - doesn't seem to be getting into the oil.

Any ideas???  ???

cheap as chips
easy to fix
looks like a taxi
really good handling
rear-drive
relatively few toys if you pick the right spec

they tick all my boxes

It's the toys that won me over - especially the rear blind (sad, I know  :-\).  I picked up my 2000 Elite for £300 as it had failed it's MOT and the seller was emmigrating.  2 new boots, plugs leads and rear exhaust and she was good to go. :y

The best bit about the RWD V6 with the auto is that you can schmooz along like a grandad or turn off the TC and hit the sport button and drive it like you stole it.

I only get 16mpg around town, but I only do 3000 miles a year, so who cares ???

Managed to put a nice couple of dents in the top of my rear bumper with a rack carrying the familys bonebreakers.

I'd stick to roof bars.  Strictly speaking you should have a trailer board behind the rear mounted racks as they will inevitably cover a chunk of the lights and reg plate.  That will require towing electrics so the rpice soon adds up...

Am I getting old or do all new cars look the same?  This could be an XF, BMW5, or just about any large car from europe couldn't it :-\

Many of them have no.spare wheel as standard either just the useless repair liquid.
I noticed this, but there is a secret compartment in the boot for a space-saver.  The Leon we have at the moment has a can of gunk, which I think is a really bad idea - how does it help with a blowout on the M25?

Thanks for the replies guys, Swindon might be an easier trip than Corby to pick up a bargain!

The room in the back is one of the appeals, to fit two small dustbin lids.

I'll keep my ears peeled on any test drives for unwelcome noise.  I did pause when I heard the fuel tank is under the front seats. Should I drive it in Hurt Locker gear!?!?! :o

Cheers again.

Looking to get a newer motor for SWMBO as her Leon is getting on and she complains about driving the Elite.  Could push to £12K for a sub 30K miler.

All the reviews for the small family hatches rave about the civic - are they really that good?  ???

The 0-60 is claimed at 8.6 and still over 50mpg.  The boot's nearly as big as a mondeo and there are plenty of toys on most models.

I've never bought Japanese before, but would this be a good start?

This might sound stupid, but my first company car was a Maestro Diesel Turbo... 8)  Admittedly not the prettiest thing and probably more aerodynamic in reverse, but the london black cab Perkins diesel had more grunt than you would believe.  As a young site engineer I was doing 40K plus per year and "The Throbmonster" took it all in it's stride.

You just had to remember to put your foot down 2 minutes before you needed the turbo to cut in  :o then you had the added bonus of a thick black smokescreen to smother anyone giving chase!

Had to give it up when the (never to be trusted) brakes failed to avert an argument with a 40T dozer blade on an earthworks job  :-X

Omega General Help / 2 Aux belts in short time - bad luck?
« on: 23 February 2012, 00:10:48 »
I've had many happy months of motoring since last post, but in the last couple of months have gone through 2 auxiliary belts :(

First time was failed water pump, second was ceased bearing on tensioner.  :-X

Do you guys think one caused the other?  Is this likely to go on with other pulleys? Or were they just coincidences?

All seems fine now, she's still only done 85K miles and goes like sh1t off a shiny one  :D

Omega General Help / Re: Cold starting issue - Crank Sensor?
« on: 17 September 2010, 23:06:38 »
Had exactly the same problem.  Then one morning she simply refused to go all day.

Crank sensor sorted it.  My man at the fixers said "Gotta be genuine VX"...

Omega General Help / Missfire when cold only
« on: 17 September 2010, 23:03:10 »
Am chuffed to bits that the elite has got through the MOT only requiring one rear shock due to frequent trips over speed bumps!!  :y

As a complete novice can anyone explain why the beast only has a missfire when cold and purrs fine once warmed up.  Is there an easy fix to this?  :-?

I do lots of short journeys but even the day after a run the issue remains....
