Omega General Help / More (oil leak related) help required please
« on: 15 March 2010, 10:58:44 »
Right, my rockers are now dry (yay ~ replaced with pucka vx ones ~ pricy but then I did buy a complete set of all intake gaskets as well), but, I seem to have a couple more leaks.
Had it up on a ramp over the weekend.
Diagnosis was the following.
Oil pressure switch is leaking out of the actual switch (is this a possibility ?)
And there is a leak around one of the oil cooler feeds near the oil filter (would this be a oil cooler failure thats leaking down the pipe giving the impression it's the pipe thats leaking).
The areas below the rockers were dry (so thats that one sorted ~ for now, although I know the breathers are clear as I had to remove the black plastic breather unit as the funny shape gasket that seals the hole had gone so it was hissing when I turned it off, so I gave them another clean just to be sure, and I checked the two pipes at the back of the block as well)
Another posibility was that the main engine oil seal had gone (but, wouldn't this empty the contents of the engine if it had blown ?)
These were all possibilities given to me rather than me coming up with them.
Oh yeah it's a 3.0 v6.
Cheers.

Omega General Help / Re: 99 v's 00 body work

nope, doors a physically the same in terms of metal. As you say outer strips and door cards are different, have a feeling wing mirror mounts are different too for facelift
Any idea if the rubber strip/colour coded one are interchangeable ? (I'll have to take a punt on the door mirror
but am hopeful a bit of drill/dremel work might sort it)

Is there a difference (other than the moulding strip, and the door cards) between the doors on a 99 model (rubber strip) and a 2000 (colour coded strip) ?

Omega General Help / Re: Cam Covers.
« on: 15 March 2010, 11:24:33 »Quote
Money making scam.
2 omegas, both around 100,000, not a warped cover in sight. If the breathers are cleaned and the cam cover tightened properly .. ie 8 Nm and not a whisker more, there is no problem.
If this was a common problem .. don't you think we all would have changed the covers by now
Reasons to change cam covers - delete as applicable
bad servicing/bad advice/rip off merchant
You missed off £96 + vat per side.

edit:- I misread that as reasons NOT to change cam covers.

Omega General Help / Re: MPG ???

It costs £79 to fill up from empty-ish and its only gonna do about 350 miles.
My 3.0 has done 459.2 miles to a full tank (If it had managed 459.4 I'd have made it to the garage) Thats travelling to work and back on M/Ways (bit of town driving) but getting stuck (always) in queues on the way back.
It's utter crap around town though.

Omega General Help / Tracing Leaks
« on: 05 February 2010, 09:19:29 »
Not a how do I, more a how I have done so on my trusty (albeit leaky) Mig.
1 bottle of
http://www.carairconditioningsupplies.com/caraircon/product.php?productid=736&cat=10&page=1
Some oil to mix it with and to top up oil in car. (stick dye into oil and shake, prior to chucking into the engine, make sure you clean the filler, otherwise any dye on this will drip down and give you the mother of all shocks as you think that the whole right hand rocker is porous ~ lesson was learnt the hard way)
Cheap UV torch (this one is multifunction so you get white as well as UV, and a pointless laser pointer)
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Black-Powerful-Led-Multi-Torch-With-UV-Laser-holster_W0QQitemZ140340200076QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_SportsLeisure_Camping_LightsLanternsTorches?hash=item20aced828c
So for roughly £10 you have the bits to trace your engine for leaks (The UV dye can also be used to trace coolant leaks).
Add on a steam clean for £15 (thats what I paid, might be a bit more/bit less).
Take car for a run, shine torch and then look on in amazement as you can see (via the UV bit of the torch) the nice/pretty flourescent streaks and discover where they originate from.

Omega General Help / Re: R/Hand plug bank full of oil

In which case I think you need to get to a base line.
Clean the sump area down and empty the plug wells of oil and then monitor again.
The key concerns I have (thinking aloud here).
1) Its pretty poor for a garage to leave plug wells full of oil on such a job!
2) Were the breathers fully cleaned or is this the route cause which is resulting in oil leaking in 2 places due to the engine casing pressurising.
1) Quite possible, wasn't a VX garage, and they quoted a price and then moaned about it taking a lot longer. Not my fault but who knows what they didn't do.
2) The answer is very probably 'No they weren't'.
As I currently have an engine full of Oil/UV dye it should be a simple exercise to check the plenum pipes (as I would think) if they were clear I'd get a good UV reading from both ends.

Interesting....any ideas how its getting from the crank seal, up the engine and into the plug wells?
Don't think it is, as when I had the last rocker gasket change I don't believe they de-oiled the plug wells. I'm getting nothing (UV wise) from the plug wells at the moment.

Just to be sure on what was leaking (as I had already had the rockers done 5 month s ago ~ I now think the oil in the plugs might have been from before this).
I bought some UV dye (for oil, not the stuff for A/C leak tracing) and a little U/V led torch.
I waited for the oil level low light to come on (happened yesterday as it happened), and mixed up a solution of dye/oil, and chucked it into the engine.
This morning, after a 60 mile drive to work, I popped the bonnet, and had a look around the rockers for a leak (expecting to find a huge one, and...... nada). So I had a look around and found that it's leaking from the drivers side front of the engine (at the bottom). As I can't get the car onto a ramp easily, would this be the sump gasket gone, or is there something attached down there that could also have a gasket thats failed ?
Cheers.

Whre in Nottingham are you.....I could probably do them for you if you can wait a week or so
It would be most appreciated if you could help me out with these (I'll supply tea/coffee/bacon sarnies/cash and any help you need).
I'm in Sherwood (NG5) and can wait (drive is already like the aftermath of the Valdez ~ even has a coating of white powder for that true South American feel

Cam cover gaskets and blocked breathers....
Could you give me a reccomendation of a place in Nottm I can get the lot done properly please. Last lot were done at a so called engine specialist, and I'm begining to think they may not specialise in the engine department after all.
Thanks

Omega General Help / R/Hand plug bank full of oil
« on: 25 January 2010, 08:18:39 »
Well, I was going to give up on the old meg, but as everything structural seemed OK I thought I'd throw £30 at her to see if she passed her MOT, and, to my amazement she did with a couple of advisories (tyres and front pads/discs).
So as I have a nice new MOT, I thought I'd let her have some new plugs/filters etc.
However she has been leaking quite a bit of oil, which I have never been able to trace (have done the rockers/camshaft seals).
When doing the plugs, the r/hand bank were full of oil, so my question is does anyone have any idea what would cause this ?
Cheers

My 3.0 has averaged 29.1 MPG over the last 7500 miles. Mind the computer milage travelled resets back to 0 instead of carrying on at 4000 miles.

Would of thought you would have to get rid of the rust, or it will come back. Would take more than chips away!!!
It was more the spraying quality, than the rust removal I was interested in.
Sorry I didn't make myself clear
