Omega General Help / Any Miggy mechanics for my 3.2 Elite?
« on: 13 June 2010, 19:25:49 »
Hi chaps, does anyone know a decent Omega mechanic in or around Bristol for my 3.2 Elite? It needs a full service, breathers cleaning out, rocker cover gaskets replaced, new coolant sensor, and may need bearings done on one or more of the wheels but not 100% on that.

JamesV6Elite has done work for me before and the guy is a genius, so he might be undertaking this just waiting to hear back but if he is tied up any recommendations welcomed. Every time my local mechanic sees my car I feel like how the husband of a gorgeous model feels when a filthy bloke starts checking her out...  ;D

Cheers, will look up the Federals I think. He mainly uses it for local round town use, but lives in Portugal and will be returning there in the next few months, so tyres need to be up to the job for a France, Spain Portugal road trip and be good in higher temperatures as well as UK.

I will also look up the Vauxhall recommended ones as not sure what they are.

Omega General Help / Tyre recommendations

Another question. My dad has a 1997 Omega Elite TD2.5 Estate on 16inch wheels.

Can anyone advise on the best tyres for this? What brand is recommended? He wants something fairly hard wearing that isn't too loud as some tyres have really bad road noise.

Cheers!

Not sure only had 2 owners from new last once since 2005 looks ok. He also gives 3 months warranty so there is some comeback if it goes fubar

As someone who has worked extensively in the motortrade a warranty is a great thing for a dealer. They sell you one for several hundred quid when it only costs them £50-60. Check the warranty itself as many only cover certain components and under certain circumstances.

My dad just bought an Elite TD Estate with a manual gearbox and 118k on the clock 2 owners from new (last one an ex-traffic cop, 1st owner Vauxhall themselves), full Vauxhall service history for £925. Now that is a reasonable price given that you inevitably always have to outlay some cash on bits and pieces that you didnt notice when you bought it.

Get yourself down the car auctions and you will see cars like that going for £3-500. Last week I bought a 1999 Mondeo Estate 2.0 16v Zetec with 2 owners from new and 42000 miles (yes 42k!) and just serviced and MOT'd at 41k for £550.

Personally, unless you have fallen in love with that particular vehicle, as those in the trade would say, that price is retail. However some people prefer buying through a dealer and getting the warranty etc so it's horses for courses, but even for a dealer I think that's steep.  :y

Air suspension: This is probably rear air-lift shockers, or Monroe Ride Levellers....

I will check for my dad but I think you are right they are probably air lift shockers.

Chipping: A definate 'must do'!
The BMW M51D was detuned to 128 BHP for the Omega, but chipping sends it back to BMW's lively 143 BHP. 'PM' TheBoy or Omegatoy for details in the first instance.
Wow thanks for this. This all makes sense now as I owned a BMW 325 TDse a few years back with the same engine and it was super quick, although only when you got the revs up a little bit. This is something we need to do so I will contact these chaps thanks very much!

Engine oil/filter-changes must be done every 4500 miles absolute max; and water pumps have been known to shed their impellers at 40-50 quid a time. Other than this, the lump's a pretty strong 'un, and some have been taken to inter-galactic mileages - literally!
Aha, well this one is now due. It has full Vauxhall service history and they were using Shell Helix. Can any of you advise on the best oil to use (e.g. brand, viscosity, synth/mineral)? We dont want to be paying out £50-60 for a high end "branded" oil when often another make can be much cheaper and just as good. However if we need to spend more then we will.

Best driven 'like you stole it' - it's a 'long-stroker' and must be kept 'on song' to perform. As long as you have no poor starting, (either hot or cold), excessive exhaust emissions, or overheating problems, you should be okay. Once warmed-up, the temp gauge needle should settle at just below mid-point on the gauge. Many of the niggles with these diesels have been the result of inadequate and/or poor servicing earlier in their lives.
Yep, this is exactly how I used to drive my BMW as its only when you get the revs up that the power kicks in. No poor starting which is good; on my BMW I had a few problems starting which I believe is generally down to the diesel pump, although I seem to remember there is a diesel pump and a 2nd 'sender' pump or something. Temp gauge is spot on and good servicing history.

Thanks so much for this advice and you other chaps for your feedback.

I have something else to check as well. The EGR pipe from manifold to valve has been replaced twice by Vauxhall; once at 109k (mileage is now near 120k) in May2008, the other about 4 years before that. This has resulted in quite a bit of oil spillage although car is being valeted today to clean this off. Has anyone had the same problem and is this caused by something else...?

Big thank you again for your help and input. Think I'm going to buy an Omega again just so I still feel part of things!!!  ;) 8-)

Omega General Help / Elite TD 1997 questions
« on: 20 May 2009, 15:20:31 »
Hi there,

I used to own an ex plod 1998 3.0 Manual estate but reluctantly (and regrettably) sold it last year. My dad has just been and bought himself a 1997 2.5 TD Manual Elite Estate. Its an ex Vauxhall Demo vehicle and has air suspension I believe, sunroof and air con, cd stacker, cargo cover and cargo net, heated front and back seats, etc etc.

It has 117k on the clock and now needs a service. Does anyone know if chipping would be a good thing in terms of economy. I know a lot of people chip their cars for power, but he needs the economy as he will be using it for cruising on the continent to Portugal via France and Spain so if the economy is compromised then he'd rather keep it as is. Any advice welcomed.

Also, any general advice or feedback from other diesel owners welcomed. How have you found your diesel to run and maintain. ANy tips or things to check appreciated.

Cheers  :)

Omega General Help / Re: E bay exhausts
« on: 25 June 2007, 16:07:19 »
The key thing is what your car is worth. For example mine is a 186,000 mile ex-rozzer MV6 estate. I only bought it for £175. Ok it had a new engine at 100k, and since then JamesV6CDX has done cam cover gaskets, aux belt, water pump, full service, etc etc etc. HOWEVER, I ordered the exhaust before James had done anything, as a cheap and quick solution. Cost me £75 from Germany and my local 'grunt' fitted it for £20.

If your car is only a runner for 6mths then it makes sense. If its long term then get it done properly.

I am also less bothered as mine is likely to bea donor car for my old Opel Rekord Coupe, so exhausts will be chopped around I suspect. We'll see!  :D :y

Hi Realboss.  Good to see another member in the Bristol area.  Whereabouts are you?  Can't really offer to help at the moment as the Missus is due to have a baby any time in the next couple of weeks.
JasonH (member on here) might be able to help out with the loan of a cambelt locking kit.  He lives in Long Ashton.

You might also be able to persuade JamesV6CDX to come and give you a hand.  He is from Cheltenham, and his mechanics skills come highly recommended around here.

I'm in north Bristol myself, Patchway. I tried JamesV6CDX and he was really really helpful. He said he was busy for a few weeks, but I tried contacting him but no response. I tried a few times over the last two weeks but the cars got to get done fairly soon as I need to use her. I have 7 cars at the moment, but cant get rid of my main car (BMW 525) until the Omegas on the road. Luckily I have a nice sized drive so can manage with 5 cars and 2 are with my brother!

Plan is to sell 3, then use the Omega engine for the Rekord towards the end of the year. Daimler will then be the following project!

My cars are:
Daimler Coupe 4.2 1976 (in my garage)
Opel Rekord Coupe 1968 (on my drive)
Omega MV6 (on my drive)
BMW 525SEi e34 (on my drive)
BMW 325i sport e30 (at my brothers)
BMW 325i Convertible lhd e30 (at my brothers)
Vauxhall Cavalier 2.0 CDX (missus car)

Cheers Tunnie, I've dropped him an email so will see. Couldnt believe my luck in buying the Omega for £175. Ok, its got 180k on the clock, but the engine was replaced by the Rozzers at 100k! :y
