Coil Spring compressors
« on: 10 March 2012, 10:55:39 »

Thinking about getting a set....

Machine mart do some nice ones, about £30 - 3 pieces, which lock
such as
http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/product/details/cht224-3piece-coil-spring-compressor
or
http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/product/details/laser-0290-coil-spring-compressor-heavy-duty

or on ebay, halfords, its all 2 piece, non locking such as
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2PC-12-COIL-SPRING-COMPRESSOR-CLAMPS-HEAVY-DUTY-/270906005876?pt=UK_Hand_Tools_Equipment&hash=item3f13419974

a lot cheaper, but dont look half as good.

Any advice on best bets?  or other options?

I would go for the non locking ones as they look slimmer. The main problem with these is finding space to fit them so the more compact the better IMHO.

Plus, they'll be used relatively rarely so no point in splashing out more than necessary. :y

Agreed... Mine are SP ones and very similar to the ebay jobbies :y :y

Important thing to remember, whichever ones you use, is to treat them and the springs with respect ;) I've seen the results of a compressor slipping on a compressed spring and the guy who's hand was in the way will never be the same again :o

i find this style better as they dont tend to creep around the spring as your winding them up.

cheers all, some food for thought there.

So, 2 are adequate, dont need the 3?

i would say 3 are always better if you have the room
another thing to consider is are they long enough? omegas have short springs but if you useing them on other cars eg 406 estate they have very long springs.

I've seen that style snap round too ;)

The single hook style ones are fine if used properly ::)

Jimbob, I've never needed more than the 2 I have ;) Although they may be due a replacement soon as they are getting a bit battered (too much use of windy gun to wind them in/out :-[ ::)
