Recently started to get this problem.

When listening to music (through CD player or online), I get a strange crackle and distortion when loading some web sites, especially those that are media-heavy. It would appear through Googling that I am not alone in having this problem. I can't find any sensible solution (bar one, which involves purchasing an expensive "Hum X" unit to reduce low voltage in the mains...or something like that).

Anyone else experienced this?

could well be an update at the root of the problem.

Intel's Matrix Storage Manager service can cause this....try disabling of present.

try uninstalling sound drivers and reinstalling from new, failing that it could be a loose speaker connection that needs reseating

Been there, got the T Shirt. Will be the sound card drivers ultimately, conflicting with graphic card drivers more than likely.

Sure you'll find the problem will go away either by getting updated drivers OR seaching Ebay for a Soundblaster X-Fi card

Aha! I'm using the on-board sound at the moment. I'll look into that Soundblaster card. Thanks!

Idiot time - how I do find what drivers I need? My Winamp slows and crackles when I load some webpages.

The easiest way I've found is to install Belarc Advisor (download it from download.com - its free).
When run that will give you a list off all the components in your machine including model numbers, so then you can just search for a driver for the model of card you have.
