I thought that the jacket was only there to protect the battery from heat from the engine - they only fittted them to vehicles with larger engines that were closer to the battery

Yep. Especially given that the top radiator hose runs right past it.

It won't protect the battery from the cold. It'll get just as cold with a jacket on when left overnight.

Well if it does then it does, if not then ahh well, but will make a new addition to the powerplant bay and i dont mean adding 2 extra cylinders to my engine
