Steering idler
« on: 02 February 2013, 16:13:29 »

Hi guys. I am a bit P***ed off. I bought a new steering idler from the bay and fitted it. Took the car all the way to wheels in motion to get the geometry done only to be told that the idler is loose. The guy showed me the play in it and it was loads. Could this be the mount that the idler sits on that has gone or do you think it could be a faulty idler? Is this a fault that is common on the omega? Hope somebody can help with this as am really p***ed now. Traveled all that way for nothing :'(

May`s well have fitted a Mars bar then. Well documented here that aftermarket idler arms are unadulterated shite

I'll send it back then. Says it has a 12 month warranty on it.

I bought this one http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=330855263355#rpdId
I will get it from http://www.allgermanparts.co.uk/ or the other ebay link in previous post.
Could it be the mounting that the arm slides over causing this or not?

You won't know until you fit the "correct" oe idler.  Unlikely though  ;)

If its a pattern idler, that will be the failure, more than likely.
Never heard of the bracket failing, but there's always a first time. I suppose.

I had free play between inner sleeve and axle. If idler arm axle is worn out, you can buy 100 arms from different manufacturers and get mad at them. I used JB Weld (epoxy), problem solved, but I was told it was wrong.:)

I used Kwik Weld.

You need to find out where free play is. Most likely I had worn out idler arm axle.
Free play can be between 2 parts: arm/outer sleeve/rubber/inner sleeve/axle.
