Dry as a bone
« on: 17 March 2013, 17:20:48 »

Hi all

Got a bit of a problem with my front wipers or more specifically the washer sprayers. The wiper arms operate fine and when the wiper stalk is pulled to spray the washers, I can hear the washer motor running but no spray from either the bonnet nozzles or headlamp washers... not even a drip!

I know I have a leak somewhere on the system as a couple of days after filling the washer reservoir, the dash will warn a low level and the system will be empty. I can see a steady drip from under the front of the car when I top up. That said If I brim it and then try it, still no spray from the bonnet or headlamp jets. I thought maybe a pipe connector had come off somewhere hence no water getting to any of the jets but other than a steady drip when I top up there's no significant stream of water anywhere which I would have expected to see if a pipe had completely come free.

Any thoughts? Its a 97 Elite Estate.

Thanks!

Dave

similar problem which turned out to be the washer motoer rubber gasket had perised thus not making a good fit, constnatly topping up, till resolved to take tank out and look at it in a better light, new rubber gasket fitted and now no leak.

The rubber seal on the washer pump is also a strainer. Extremely common for pondlife in the washer bottle to block the strainer.

Have a read of Cleaning Windscreen Washer System

Headlamp washers & screen washers are fed from two quite separate pumps, your lights need to be on for the headlamps washers to work. They're both in the bottle which is behind your front bumper. Usual cause of lack of water to the screen, forgetting about leaks, is a clogged up suction filter/strainer where the screen washer pump sits in the bottle.

There is a hose connection near strut top. Disconnect it and watch spray to see if it is clogged before or after that connector. If it is clogged after, remove cowl cover (whatever you call it), disconnect hoses and keep spraying to find restriction.

Usually passenger side jet blocks in body - replace jet and should cure.  You can get a new one off ebay for around £5 :y

Thanks for the advice.

Traced the blockage to the pipe between passenger side scuttle and jets themselves. Looking at post above, I will get new jets - how are these fitted as there isn't much room to move from bonnet underside, only two skinny cut outs where jets are. Do jets themselves prise out from the top face of the bonnet? Didn't want to try this for fear of putting a whopping scratch in the paint!

Prefacelift? The jets are clipped to the bonnet with a couple of tabs either side underneath. You need a pair of long nose pliers & gently squeeze them both together as you push the jet from underneath. If they're heated, they're going to be around £20 each  ??? You sure you won't get away using an airline to clear them?  :-\ I did have a problem with a Senator's washer jet (same type) in that the heater bit had rusted & expanded so that the screen wash just emptied out over the engine rather than through the jet to the screen .... worth a look.
