If I may just wade into this one:

I do not condone any type of violence unless you are defending yourself or someone else, nor do I think that everyone should carry arms in the way the NRA would like people in the States to, but I read an article once of which the jist was something like this......

...in Switzerland every able bodied male has to do a lifetime of national service giving up a few weekends a year for training.  Each soldier is given a rifle and takes it home, and when they finish their service they get to keep the rifle.  At weekends railway platforms are full of these men going off to training with their rifles.

In 1997 there were 13 firearms incidents in Switzerland, 12 were accidents.....

Now I beleive that is 12 accidents and one incident too many.  However if you teach a youngster how to use a firearm in a safe, controlled environment they will have a healthy respect for firearms.  Whereas if they get that exposure from someone somewhat dubiously maligned the attitude towards firearms in that individual will be completely different.

I know for a fact that all my soldiers and all the cadets I knew as a kid have a healthy respect for firearms and I doubt very much that any of them carry knives or use guns (except for their job  :y)

Any other point for reflection:  Ever since legally owned pistols were banned in the 90's gun crime has been increasing at a faster rate.......

.......  If every parent took their responsibilities seriously and saw that their offspring were brought up "correctly" there wouldn't be half the problems we experience these days.

What if ...... both your kids are brought up exactly the same, have both been given the same advantages etc etc and one of them turns out great and the other .... err.. doesn't?
Am I only half a bad parent?  :-?

Which is why I said there wouldn't be half the problems ... recognising the fact that good parenting isn't the be all and end all ---- All kids are different
