Software Combination. (Upgrade time)
« on: 23 January 2016, 14:59:05 »

I know there have been various windows threads, so I thought I would start one as well, and was wondering what options most of you would choose.

Software is for a decent PC, 8 core AMD CPU, with 16gb DDR3, 2 GB Graphics card etc, DVD/RW + BR/RW also runs output to a 4K monitor

So which software choices.  ?

Windows 7/8/8.1 or 10
Which office Package.
Anti virus
Spy Ware
Adblock
Backup
Plus any other choices

Also there seems to be a lot of harddeive activity when the PC is idle, is there any software that can monitor whats happening (Windows upgrades are turned off)

For me it is
Operating system: Debian (Linux)
Office package: Libreoffice (was Openoffice)
email client: Thunderbird (icedove)
web browser: Firefox (iceweasel) + NoScript (blocks adverts as well as any unwanted java script)
backup: I save copies of anything useful to two (linux) file servers.

Firewall: iptables
You can get virus scanners for Linux but I haven't installed one.

I`m using professional 2013, I was using Open Office but sending time sheets to people using Office was causing problems because Microsoft Office couldn`t open the Open Office files, or the people using it couldn`t lol.

I don`t use it heavily, just a few excel documents every week, but it can do more than Open Office.

MS Dos 3.1
Word Perfect or Wordstar at a push
Anti virus - not required
Spy Ware - not required
Adblock - not required
Backup - 1.4 Mb Floppy, may need 2 of them if you want to back up system as well.
Plus any other choices - Comm port for a 14.4 Fax / Data Modem.

Sorted.  ;)

That brings back some memories.

Amstrad 1640 twin 5 1/4 drives.

4 Disks to load some of the options

Plus supercalc, realy did enjoy learning to use that.
