You're right - it was the first time we met if I recall - I think a day after my birthday - and it was a cracking day.

2 years - not an uprated gasket - K series - we must have done the job properly then!

Shall we set a date to change it again? It'll never last much longer... ;D

As she car shares for work now, its only done 20k since (now 92k).  She checks the coolant every day (pesky leak somewhere), and oil, and knows the symptoms should it happen again.

Next time we change it, can we change that melted cambelt cover ;D

I love that little car - took it out for a blast the other day, brilliant in the bends, predicatble, handbrake predictable, really nice car to blast around it.

Funny really because if I was after a small hatch a blobby 200 would be high on the list

Just to bring this to the top again for another question...

As it's an 8 valver... Is the torque and sequence still the same (I think it is)?

Can the uprated gasket and shim still be fitted?

TIA

I bought Mrs TMX a 98 Rover 414 Si with a failed HG i replaced it with the upgraded one and the car covered well over 50k with no problems!

i also changed the rad & thermostat as these can be why the gasket fails. was a very very reliable car the only issue was the imobiliser used to play up occasionally

i always thought the K Series lumps were All 16V units!

great engines they will take some stick unfortunatly the Rover 400 doesnt handle! i sold ours and got an Astra CDX that needs a new PAS pump!

K series available as 8v as well, used in metros/100s, some base wedge 200s, and some early bubble 200s.  Think the 1.1 was 8v only.

I had a couple of 400 saloons, both diesels, both on her company car lease scheme, so both well ragged  :P, never really noticed an issue with the handling - maybe the extra weight at front helped?  Had a couple of 416 petrols when ours were in for repair (::)), but I was always chuffeured, as there was some confusion over the insurance for the loan cars, so can't comment on the handling of the petrols.

I always change the thermostat and water pump, along with cam belt kit, as, like you say, thermostat is most common cause of failure. I don't understand why the stat on these seems to always fail CLOSED!!! FFS, it's just ridiculous!

As for the Rad... It'll get a good flush through and then I'll take a view on it. It'll all go back together with cheap oil for 500 miles and good old GM antifreeze, then new VX oil and filter  :y :y :y

Her 400 if you go round a bend at hmm more than 50mph things get a little intresting! hers is the 414Si with pokey little 14" alloys! i find it slids about alot! and lots of body roll!

problably find my mrs's is nackered! has done 139k on the same 1.4 engine lol

covered more miles than the Mig!

am waiting for the local motor factors to get in stock the Alternator & PAS drive belts as they are now slipping and the belts look well tired! is there a way of doing it without removing the engine mount?

Ours we had from near new, so the suspension was probably less tired, but ours didn't stuffer excessive body roll, even piling it into the roundabouts. Expected understeer, followed by lift-off oversteer, but nothing unexpected.
