Cheapo Tech 2 'v' "My Naff Code Reader"
« on: 08 January 2009, 10:23:56 »

Been thinking about replacing the old cheapo tech2 with one of these "My Naff Code Reader" devices off ebay, so started doing some research.

Looks to be a very similar interface, except more to it, and fully English.

It seems to be what the cheapo promised to be, lets you view certain live data, program keys, activate some motors / servo's etc.

my search led me to its home page
http://www."My Naff Code Reader".net/

which details it also programs keys etc, looked in the download section, and theres a demo.

http://www."My Naff Code Reader".net/"My Naff Code Reader"_DEMO_070319_EN.exe

Thought that will be good to see what its really like, as all the screenshots I can find are in german.

So I have a go, when I ran it, there is some info as below :

Welcome to the DEMO version of "My Naff Code Reader".

This version lets you to try out the basic functions of "My Naff Code Reader", with a proper, serial port based interface.

Unlike VAG cars, Opel cars does not have a common diagnostic protocol.
There are several diagnostic protocol, such as KW81, KW82, KW-2000, just to name a few.

For the KW-2000 protocol, the standard serial port based diagnostic interface is suitable, in most cases.

For the KW81, and KW82 protocol, a specail, microcontroller based interface is required, since the protocol itself
using very strict timing, which cannot be achived with a standard serial port, under any Windows version.
Altough, you can communicate with most of these controller with a standard serial port based interface, but there could be
problems.

We will regularily update this demo version, so if you detect any error, please let us know.
Also, If you have any comments, or idea about the software, please let us know.

You could reach us at info@vezerdiagnosztika.hu

You'll find more information about "My Naff Code Reader" on our website, www.vezerdiagnosztika.hu

So I play, and you cant do much without an interface.

'Hmmmm' I thinks, and install it on the laptop, and plug in the cheapo tech2.

Outside and into the car, and bugger me, it works!
Best software there is for the cheapo tech2!
Does everything the dodgy hungarian (or other improved version) does, and more!

Read and reset various codes, viewed live data off the engine, viewed the individual circuit resitance in the airbag circuits.
couldnt read everything, expect the better interface is needed for that.
also limited so couldnt do any actuator tests.

Never had such functionality, this demo version has certainly improved the usefulness of the cheapo.

Now I've seen how good it is (and can be) am very tempted to buy the full version.

If you have the cheapo, get this and play, I think you will be very happy :)

on ebay seem to be about £40 from china
£80 from uk

£100's from other shops for some reason

with a usb adaptor, that also does CAN!
also does saab's

the 08 version seems to be the one to go for.

Cheers, looks to be a nicely updated version of what quite a few of us have.

We are used to that being VERY buggy!

From what I've see so far, this is a massive improvement.

Even if I hadnt ordered, the demo version offers more that the original version ever did  :D

Wouldnt connect to my gearbox....maybe the new one will.

From what I can gather if you have had the gearbox updated to the latest version by real tech2, then the cheap ones dont read it, old versions of firmware could sometimes be read.

That said the gearbox update is that good, tis a small price to pay.

I couldnt get the cheapo to talk to my climate, but it can on a similar panel on the vectra b!  go figure

Is it a worthwhile change the auto box update. Was thinking about getting it done at the North West meet if poss.

How about the Climate update, mine never seems to slow down enough, always on '3' when on automatic and cabin is up to temp, is that cured in the update?

Dont think there will be a real tech2 there to do updates :(

VERY worthwhile, makes the box smoother, and feel more powerful.
Climate updates mainly for  the facelift, which again is a huge usability improvement.
For prefacelift the clue is how many fan speeds you have, if 0-9 you are probably at latest, if less speeds then normally updatable.
I dont know anyone who has had either updated that wouldnt recommend it.

Just a thought...

I wonder if all of these devices come with the decent lead that handles the real-time protocol stuff internally, as opposed to a standard cheapo tech-2 lead?

That might explain the differences in price?

Does the software tell you which lead it has detected?

It's hit and miss. I tried a 'milage correction' on my 99 Astra G low blow TD and it wouldn't get passed the initial connection. However when I tried it on my wife's 52 plate 1600 16v Astra I managed to 'correct' it by a mile! And the diesel dash works in the petrol Astra.

Bugger! The fan speeds go up to 9 so maybe on the latest, will have to get the box done some other time 8-)

There is only 1 UK importer, and the price is around £400.  All other copies are illegal copies.

To protect the forum, no further discussion or links to dodgy copies.  I will prune this thread.

No discussion on how to get the latest version from anywhere other than manufacturer or their authorised distributor

Mine came with the attachment for mileage adjustment on the Omega
