Its something to do with the newer engines which makes them much less 'chip able'  i think Vaux got the most out of them really (2.2 2.6 3.2) although i think this is one for MarksDTM to reply to really...

It's probably more to do with the newer chips being surface mounted rather than socketed, as it's more reliable and cheaper to manufacture. It will have a flashable EEPROM instead that can probably be reprogrammed through the diag socket. So just as "chippable", except you don't do it with a chip ;). In addition to having the appropriate hardware to do remaps, there are almost certainly some additional obstacles to overcome such as checksums etc. Hence why it's much more common to find replacement chips for socketed ECUs than remaps for EEPROM ones.

Exactly what i said, 'less chip able'  ;) ;D ;D

Cheers for that Paul, you chipped yours?

I thought the chips where designed to run without the cats?

They are. For maximum effect get rid of the cats, but there will be an improvement even if you don't remove them.

Does anyone know if there are insurance implications in fitting these chip? I was always lead to believe that if a car was modded in any way, you have to notify your insurer otherwise your cover might be void. :-?

By law you should notify your insurance company of any modifications to your car.

I suppose to be by the book you should tell your insurance but I haven't and it only takes 10 minutes to change it back to the original chip;)

Not yet. I've thought about it cos it would be nice to have some extra poke but I'm not sure how it would fit in with the dual-fuel system. I think with that being a sequential gas injection system it probably piggybacks on the main ECU for the injection timings etc, and I really don't know enough about it all to know how a chip will affect things. One thing though is that it's almost certainly advancing the ignition timing which works quite well on dual-fuel cars due to the much higher octane rating of propane (around 110 IIRC!). So I dunno, might be worth a try.

Is it an SGI system? It makes a big difference as the older systems don't rely on the main ECU for fuelling, they just have a simple closed loop system running off the lambda sensors (or more likely just one lambda sensor with the hasty assumption that both banks are the same, they can't adjust fuelling for individual banks anyway).

It would be interesting to discuss the results with said member if it is an SGI system they're running.
