Hi everyone. Can any one tell me what sort of amp output charge level my hand held radio would require I bought it second hand but it didn't have a charger with it.
It's a Silva S12
The spec is: operating voltage 8.4 v DC
Max charge voltage                 13 V
RF output                                4W (High power)
                                               1W (Low power)

Disagree, the 1.2A is the current drain from the battery when transmitting on High Power. The Battery is rated at 650mA so charging it at 1.2A isn’t going to do it any good.

If charge current is unknown, safe rule of thumb is to slow charge at 10 - 20% of the batteries output rating.

Noticed that the Hand Held has a 12v external in, so it may well be if presented with 12v it will have its own slow charge circuitry built in, but this needs confirming.

As Zirk says, for maximum battery life you should charge at 10% of the battery A/h rating...in this case, 65mA.

Battery construction is also another factor that needs to be taken in to account where charging is concerned, use the wrong charger and the battery makes quite an impressive bang when it explodes.
