I was in Surrey for Christmas and had to remove all the crackers from the table because I had not had time to run all the family past MI6. (not). ;D

If you delve into what terrorism achieves (some listed above) you find it is quite a powerful weapon.  And all it is is uncivilised behaviour. Wow.  We're sure heading there.

Quite so Chris:

This a very powerful weapon which, aside from the personal tragedy it invokes, very cleverly gets the state to act against the interests of the very people targeted by such heinous acts and those same people whom the state is charged to protect

No doubt the relevant authorities will use this an excuse to introduce even more ludicrous measures to make flying from one of our airports an event to be avoided if at all possible. Its already an experience which fills me with dread. >:(

From the original link (now updated):

Peter King, who sits on the US House of Representatives Homeland Security Committee, said the suspect had third-degree burns.

The New York Republican named the detainee as Abdul Mudallad, 23, a Nigerian national whose name, he said, was in a database indicating "a significant terrorist connection" although it did not appear on a "no-fly" list.

So he was on a database as being a London-based Nigerian student connected with terrorists, but no one thought it a bit odd that he should want to fly alone to Detroit from Amsterdam on Christmas Day.

Surely he should have been worth a "tug" at passport control? Or was no one really checking that hard?

Just speculating.

Great, isn't it? With all the intelligence gathering and surveillance that goes on these days, when the authorities have all the information they need at their fingertips they ignore it.

Just goes to show that their real motives have nothing to do with the odd lunatic blowing up an aircraft. >:(

Exactly. :y..........in fact, call me cynical ,but the odd aircraft being blown up would probably help them on their way to achieving the complete nanny state.

at least Obama has told the US authorities to step up security - how does that stop someone with a device boarding a plane outside the US?

i am no stranger to airport security, on my cheapo standby flights, because we had carry on only, we were always nabbed for those extra searches. This rate, its going to be no hand luggage at-all in the cabin

Earlier this year, Mrs Varche flew from East Mids to Malaga and went through security with her cabin baggage. In it she had a new electric slow cooker and that was packed full of packets of various curry powders, chillies etc that are so loved by Mr Varche. They clearly showed up on the scanner- even the electrical circuitry and mains cable. The officer called his mate over and they both had another look at it on screen. they DIDN'T have her open it though.

Doesn't say much for security.
