What I find amazing is that the majority of "fails" are for just 2 areas .... "brakes" then "lights & signals" with the next lot being "suspension", Tyres", "Fuel & exhaust"

Now I accept that the majority of folks out there may not be able to physically check Brakes, Suspension, Fuel & Exhaust but EVERYONE can check lights, signals and tyres .. in fact not CAN .. the word is SHOULD !!

:(

Agreed. But the sheer number of cars on the road with lights out (even headlights FFS!) makes me believe that the average motorist is neither capable nor interested and just leaves it to be picked up at MOT time.

In addition, regarding brakes, I have been pulled up  where the brakes have been perfectly OK performance-wise but the tester has not been happy with the remaining friction material at 3 or 4 mm or more. Now, for me at that level I'm making a mental note to get some more pads and change them when I get a spare evening but I'm, guessing MOT testers now work on the assumption that if it is going to require attention during the next year they fail it. :(

AFAIK, if they fail it for lack of friction material they should refuse to do the roller test :-/ :-/

Once your vehicle is in the hands of the individual conducting the test, it is nothing more than the testers "professional opinion" that dictates whether the vehicle passes or not (excluding targets that don't officially exist of course).

MOT testers can be done for not failing, so my usual tester fails borderline cars then passes them to get his failure up.

Nothing wrong with them but it save the ministry annoying him.

Prolly the reason i was handed a fail sheet for a mot on the trafic i was driving last week.....failed on dim front sidelight bulbs.....(the bulbs had blackened, i had noticed beforehand)....
Given the pass sheet 5 secs later....saying we've changed them for you.....no charge.

I would have gone back and ranted at them if they had of charged.......coz they didnt change them at all!!
Same bulbs in there.

Failed last two years 2007/8 it was Exhaust blowing - just before he fitted my new system.

2008/9 my tow bar protector plate partly blocks the number plate and slightly dodgy wishbone bushes

2009/10 due next week
