Plus I would imaginge with the cost of the MOT and the retest, people are now aiming to get it rught 1st time.

But, is a failure classed as a fail on the test, or failure after failing the retest?

Surprise, surprise! Vehicles that get not the slightest bit of attention from either driver or owner fail the MOT.

Saw a 55 plate one in our village, front totally stoved in after an accident on the snow. Both front tyres down to canvas. Not ideal for driving in winter, really.

What I find amazing is that the majority of "fails" are for just 2 areas .... "brakes" then "lights & signals" with the next lot being "suspension", Tyres", "Fuel & exhaust"

Now I accept that the majority of folks out there may not be able to physically check Brakes, Suspension, Fuel & Exhaust but EVERYONE can check lights, signals and tyres .. in fact not CAN .. the word is SHOULD !!

Agreed. But the sheer number of cars on the road with lights out (even headlights FFS!) makes me believe that the average motorist is neither capable nor interested and just leaves it to be picked up at MOT time.

In addition, regarding brakes, I have been pulled up  where the brakes have been perfectly OK performance-wise but the tester has not been happy with the remaining friction material at 3 or 4 mm or more. Now, for me at that level I'm making a mental note to get some more pads and change them when I get a spare evening but I'm, guessing MOT testers now work on the assumption that if it is going to require attention during the next year they fail it.

I can vouch for that swmbo hasn't got a clue and I have done hers three times in the last few months(bulbs that is)

MOT testers can be done for not failing, so my usual tester fails borderline cars then passes them to get his failure up.

Nothing wrong with them but it save the ministry annoying him.

It may well have been in the back of your mind but from what I can gather not in the back of TB's mind,more like all over his car
