Opinion polls forwhat they are worth, tell us that the majority of people are against the strike. I am a former TGWU shop steward and safety rep Banjax. I have spent many weeks on union courses at Essex uni, being taught all the mantras etc.
I used to send money to the striking miners in the 80,s.
I have led strikes and stood on picket lines. Ive been there, done it, read (most of) the book - Das Kapital - and bought the Tshirt.
Then I grew up, got a mind of my own and came to the conclusion that if you want something in this life you have to work for it and earn it. The country doesnt owe anyone a living. If your employer isnt making money than you dont have a god given right to an index linked annual pay increase. If my employer cant afford to give me annual pay increases and pension contributions, what right does the govt have to continually increase the amount of taxation it takes from me and my employer to fund the public sector. The public sector needs a reality check. We took the pain now its their turn.
I repeat - the public sector has grown by almost 1 million employees in less than 15 years. The private sector has shrunk. People are living longer. So if we are going to keep fulfilling present arrangements on public sector pensions - WHERE IS THE MONEY GOING TO COME FROM?
