A very pleasant suprise
« on: 23 August 2011, 23:16:58 »

Having crohn's means dealing with food intolerances that you cannot test for but find by trial and error.  So far I have found garlic and spring onion (two of my fav foods) but I am sure there are others.

Anyway, the missus and I went to the cinema and then went to Wagamamas afterwards for our Asian food fix.  This is a little difficult for me as a lot of asian food has garlic, for example at the all you can eat chinese buffet I am stuck with the seasame prawn toast and crispy duck pancakes  :P

I asked the young waitress very apologetically as I hate being a fuss in resturants.  I used to be a waiter so I know what it is like.  I explained my predictament and said I would chose a few dishes for her to ask the chef about whether or not they have garlic.

"No need" She said.  "We have an allergy menu, hang on"  And back she came with a ring binder turned to the appropriate page for garlic allergy.  It stated which meals I could eat and which needed minor adjustments or specific options.  Most food allergies were covered from what I could see which was suprising as most places think I am winding them up when I say I am garlic intolerant.

A fantastic idea and a great implementation.  I wish more resturants did the same then I would not have to play Russian Roulette with my food :y

Wagamamas, you just found another regular :y

How to earn respect and gain more custom due to word of mouth!
This restaurant should be on the news and highlighted just how accomodating they are - and show up some of the other "toff" places who don't care or have a clue!!  :y

Very good service... We have the same problem as SWMBO is severely allergic (as in, Adrenaline injections or death type allergy :o :o) to many foods including Tomato, Pepper, most spices, nuts, etc, etc... The list is very long and quite random at times e.g. she can eat cooked onion but not raw ::)

It makes eating out, or even at someone else's house, quite interesting and is the reason why she doesn't just graze off the BBQ at meets but arranges her own food wrapped in foil ;) :y

It could be worse, then! ;) (Those two are my favourite 'regular' Chinese dishes :))

have a look around - there may be an app for your condition.

I have a mate in DE&S who uses an app to calculate his insulin requirements. Using this has decreased his requirement by 75% against the original "carpet-bombing" approach.

OK Crohn's is less common than diabetes, but it's worth a look

The only app I can find (Android) is one for finding the nearest toilet, and it only works in the USA.

Should have bought an iPhone..  :D There are 15 apps for that.. although three of them appear to be "bathroom locators", one is the "Colonoscopy Prep Assistant" (I dread to think!) and the remainder appear to be apps you use to track your diet & symptoms..

The trackers are pish, like the iPhone.  They are not very useful at all having used one for a couple of months I realised I could figure it out myself quicker than the App could  :y

I found I had a food intolerance to my favourite restuarant.  It seems to have a bad effect around 12hrs later.

Nothing to do with the Chicken Naga or the Cobra beer, you understand ::)

Joking aside, I feel sorry for those with food intolerances - there is so much variety and flavours you have to miss out on. I like my food (that explains an awful lot!), and would struggle with many of the intolerances that people have.  Fortunately my own intolerances are minor - lactose, and latterly, seafood, the latter may be due to not particularly liking it, and becoming intolerant due to lack of eating it.  Clearly, none of my intolerances are dangerous beyond a quick chunder.

Having been through various exclusion diets, it now appears I have a high histamine level. Or at least thats the latest theory. Which means high histamine foods, like processed meat, chocolate, sea food, wine, tomatoes, strawberries, anything that ferments sets off flu like symptoms, aches and pains and tummy troubles.

anti histamine tablets help, to the point I can now feel the effects after eating a badun. Where as before I felt the effects all the time and felt crap, except for the odd good day when I coincidentally felt ok after eating the right food.

However some foods are worth the agro. So curry tonight.  ;D

Crohns is a very different thing to food intolerance. Its an incurable disease of the intestine which can often be a terrible thing for those who suffer from it. It seems that some foods can bring out the worst of the symptoms though, so in that respect there can be similarities.
There seems to be a lot more people suffering from it these days for some reason. I have read that the bacteria which causes it isnt naturally found in the human body, but is naturally occurring in cows milk. :-/
