auto gear lever
« on: 21 February 2007, 22:54:01 »

i have a 2000 ,2.5 v6 petrol with auto box.when the outside temprature is close to freezing i cannot move the gear lever out of park.i have to wrestle with the lever for ages until it moves.the button at the back will not pull up.the colder it gets the longer it takes for it to move.in mild weather there is no problems at all.if its not stateing the obvious, i am pressing the brake pedal

Doesn't help, but that once happened in my wife's, on about the coldest day weve had.
We guessed at something wet and frozen, Hasn't happened since.

there's an interlock solenoid (released by pressing on the brake pedal) - perhaps that is sticking? You could try lifting the gear lever cover, there is a yellow button on the left of the lever which is the manual override for the interlock - try pressing that when it happens again ...

Do you hear the same 'click' when depressing the brake pedal (when being "faulty")?
If the solenoid is playing up it may be difficult when cold or if damp even frozen.
How many miles?  I have heard of them faulty but they do seem to go on and on ...
Perhaps a rouge connector to the release solenoid.
Squeeze the sides of the gater to lift it out of the way and you'll see the gubbins clear as day with the yellow plastic (manual mode intervention) key activated with the brake circuit.  Just a thought; does your 'brake check' go out when it is in troublesome mode (brake switch fault?).
BTW, if stuck, this is how you release the lever to get out of park.
