I can't believe you guys put a 400+ quid set of tires on a car that costs 500-1500.  I'm having enough trouble working up the courage to spend 300 on the suspension!  And that's the cheapest it can be done.  I only put 30 quid of petrol in at a time . . .

£30 of petrol, Id never leave the forecourt!

For the bit extra for good tyres, I would rather pay it than wish I'd payed it after ploughing into a bus stop!  Ive had a car use me as brakes because of his own duff tyres in the wet, I bet the few extra quid on tyres would seem cheap now after insurance repurcussions.
If the tyres and breaks are good, doesn't matter what the rest of the car is like, they are the important bits to me.

I believe in good tires and brakes for safety, but good tires don't have to be over 100 quid each.

Trains may have been invented here, but public transport is a foreign concept!

I doubt it. Remember the state of your Dad's, despite having plenty of tread (camber problem aside).  Hard tyres crack after a while, which makes them ripe for blowouts etc...
