I assume you mean a torx one of a Veccy  ...  it's worth a try, but just insert it by hand to make sure the threads are the same.  The worst that can happen then is that it leaks, in which case you have your answer.  :-?

It just seems like a good idea to fit one with the rubber washer if possible, as, requiring a much lower torque value, the thread is less likely to strip  

The threads are the same - M14, with a 1.5mm pitch..

The copper washer should be annealled and thus be soft.  Harder than the 'O' ring obviously, but still soft enough to be marked by a thumb nail.  If its re-used without annealling, then it will probably leak.

Copper washer needs a flat surface to mate against whilst the 'O' ring may well be fed into a slight taper so that its compressed both across the flats as well as into the thread, hence the compare surfaces query.

Same thread is a no brainer...

From memory mine has a torx plug with an "O" ring. The "O" ring fits into a groove on the plug face and seals against a flat surface on the face of the sump so I'd say it's a go'er providing the surface of the sump hasn't been chewed up.
