Sounds like it is the MAF sensor after all.  Buy a second hand one though, new costs a fortune and they rarely fail so used one is fine.  There are plenty of folk on here that will be able to sell you one for peanuts.

I believe there is an air leak somewhere though. When I accelerate quickly to 4750rpm I hear a whistling down similar to that made by a slipping belt

Thats most likely the issue!

I'm busy today, but if the weather is nice tomorrow (too much junk in the garage), you can pop it over.  Or if Tunnie is around, use his garage ;D
