Won't start - Air Flow Meter?
« on: 10 July 2008, 15:52:18 »

My 2.5 v6 wouldn't start today. It turned over strongly but wouldn't fire at all. I've had it towed to a local independant who have got it going and say they reckon its a faulty Air Flow Meter and that'll be £300 please.

Before I authorize the work any of you experienced guys got any comments?

Does it sound right?

I've spent over £2500 on various repairs and servicing over the last three years and I'm getting to the end of my tether.

No it doesn't sound right at all!

1) I am yet to see a MAF fail
2) MAF fault codes are commnly thrown when the crank sensor plays up (code 19)
3) With a fully failed MAF it would not stop the car from starting.

Sound unlikely.  Far more likely to be the crank sensor at fault which is a far cheaper fix.  Seems that it's not uncommon for garages to claim MAF sensors are faulty and charge you a bomb.  You need some confirmation of fault codes.

Thanks guys, I'll go get it back.

I'll see if they can give me the error codes.

Short out pins 4 and 6 in the diag connector with a paper clip and read them yourself.

Thanks Marks,

I just watched the video and printed out the photo for the "Paper Clip Test".

I really appreciate the help.

Spoke to the garage again because I can't get a lift to pick the car up tonight.

They say that when it was recovered to them they simply turned the key and after a few seconds it started up. They have logged error code 74 "Mass Air Flow Voltage High".

They are only charging me for recovery if I want to take it away.

Spoke to the garage, the car started on first turn of the key this morning so I will be collecting it this afternoon.
