Gearbox progress
« on: 11 September 2008, 19:34:18 »

Well hopefully it aint thrust washer  :)

Checked underneath today, and leak evident at rear of large sump, several bolts not tight, (maybe gasket issue?)  while tightning a couple just span, so a thread or 2 has gone :(  looks like its tap and die set and some bigger bolts time, and hope that will sort it.

got 1/2 a litre of fluid in as well.

James - I hope this is an easy fix.

However if it is thrust washer, I reckon I could tackle one, having wached our resident gearbox expert perform the operation.

I would be happy to help out, over a weekend of beer drinking, if it was necessary ;)

One of mine stripped when I changed the fluid. I think the threadlock they use is stronger than the casting. :(

On the bolt I had issues with I was able to fit a longer bolt and a nylock nut on the top side of the sump mounting flange in the gearbox casting because the hole ran right through.

If my suspicions are right the bolts are thread cutters. As the boxes are no designed to be serviced the bolts go &  stay in ar far as vauxhall are concerned. Only way to minimise stripping on refit is to finger start them & hope to find the last thread cut.
