the range in your tank is displayed by giving an average over an amount of time, going off your manner of driving

if you're heavy footed for a while it'll give you a range based on the remaining fuel running out if you continue to be that heavy footed, but say you ease off and hit a motorway and do a steady cruise the range will increase considerably, then when you hit town it'll drop like a rock!
