Andys right direction of belt only matters when its been reused , mind you would suggest you put it on reading belt details on top run so it goes clockwise..

PS Gates belts still have markings on or at least the ones i have bought (2) in last month or so have.. :y

Did 2 V6s in August - used Contitech kits - all markings + arrows present on belts (+GM part nš!!)

Cant believe so many replies, so quickly.

I will have a go at lining up the old and new and transferring the markings.

Thanks to all :y

Please be aware that lining up the markings is NO substitute for using the cam timing kit.  The belt markings make it easier to get the belt roughly right but you really need the timing kit to get the timing of bank 1 right against bank 2 and the crank timing.  The V6 is different to many cambelt set ups where no adjustment exists: in that case it is just line the marks up and away you go

I thought the point of the marks on the belt was that you could have the timing marks on the sprockets lined up properly and everything correctly locked in place but still fit the belt one or 2 teeth out. When I did mine I remember having to push and pull a bit to get the marks on the belt aligned with the marks on the sprockets and bottom pulley.

If the belt is not fitted with the right number of teeth between each pulley, surely no amount of tensioner adjustment can compensate- or doesn't it work like that?

quite right - if you do not have the right number of teeth between pulleys then you will not be able to time it correctly.  THe point I was trying to make is that even with the belt markings you still need the locking kit to get it spot on.
