Vauxhall Cam Belt With No Markings
« on: 15 October 2008, 18:38:31 »

I intend to change the cam belt on my V6 and have purchased your DVD for help.
Because I regard the cam belt as a highly critical part I decided to pay through the nose and by one from Vauxhall (£140). :'(

On opening it I find it has no timing marks as demonstrated in the Haynes manual so how does one know that it is correctly installed :question

Thats right,  a lot of them don't come with markings :-/

if your old belt still has some markings, put the old and new belts side by side and mark the new belt against the old one

The markings are there only as an initial installation guide, although aren't necessary as such.

When you rotate the engine, it's inportant that the cam sprocket's timing marks come in true.  If they don't then it's a case of off with the belt an start again.

You may feel that perhaps it would be helpfull to mark one of the teeth so that you have a known constant reference from which to align against the crankshaft sproket.

So they are non directional. Would have thought for a belt this was quite important?

As far as I'm aware, you only need to worry about direction if you're refitting an old belt.

Vauxhall deleted the marks about 3 years ago (why i don`t know)but as long as you have the locking tools etc its not that important as a general rule if the belt has no arrows on it the writing on the belt must be the right way i.e facing you so you can read it. :y

Mines an AST - good quality, no problems using on either of mine.

Andys right direction of belt only matters when its been reused , mind you would suggest you put it on reading belt details on top run so it goes clockwise..

PS Gates belts still have markings on or at least the ones i have bought (2) in last month or so have.. :y

I did mine recently, bought the replacement from vauxhall and it had no markings, so I spent a happy hour counting teeth between markings on the old one and transferring the marks to the new one. I still didn't get it on correct to the markings BUT I was using a Sykes Pickavant timing tool and, at the end of the day, that was what I used to time it up. (and it ended up better timed than the vauxhall garage had done it last time!)

Good Luck, Pat
