Sounds about right...price wise to be honest
The cooler/plate/washers are around £120 on their own

Indeed, might try to get a few more.....that was for seals, sealent, kit and antifreeze

Hmmmm!

Gunky stuff around oil filler tube and cap as well.
Would this indicate that there is also water in the oil and therefore might not just be oil cooler?

Milky residue around the filler cap is condensation and  not a sign of head gasket mate. When you have done the oil cooler and changed the oil and filter, take the car on a goodlong run at a fairly high speed to get the engine good and hot and you will find that the mayo will disapear. this a symptom of fairly short runswhere the engine never really gets VERY HOT.
