Brown Gunk instead of coolant!! Knackered Engine??
« on: 10 July 2009, 17:47:43 »

My 2.5 V6 very suddenly overheated.
I stopped and lifted the bonnet to find a Brown gooey type of gunk where their would normally be coolant.

The car seems to be running ok with no major noises or drop in power. I've heard this can be oil cooler problem rather than head gasket and subsequently a knackered engine?

Anyone had this problem?

Any help or advice would be really appreciated.

Thanks

Dan

I would say definitely oil cooler. Just had the same problem with mine.

Get a new oil cooler kit (around the £125 mark IIRC) and there is an excellent how to guide on here! :y

Whatever you do DON'T EVEN START THE CAR UNTIL IT IS SORTED!!!! :y

Agreed  :y

And the thermostat!  :y

A word of advice. Don't scrimp and try reusing any of the bolts or washers. I found this out the hard way and had to re do them. 2 new cooler bolts and 4 washers and 2 new coolant bridge bolts and 4 washers is definitely a must IMO.  :y

if you do do the thermostat whilst doing your oil cooler (as I did) the bolt securing the coolant tranfer pipe is called the Ba***ard bolt with good reason, good luck :y

I didn't find it as hard as I had imagined it was going to be. I used a 10mm spanner on it which worked fine.  :y

oil cooler as said. Basic rule for the omega(for every rule there is always an exception but....)
oil in water, oil cooler.
Water in oil head gaskit.
Simples. :-)

Some very valid points re other parts while your in there but for me personally i wouldnt bother changing any other unrelated items(unless needed of course). Once you have had the plenum off once or twice its really not that hard a job to remove the manifold and inlet to get to the v where the oil cooler lives, and first time out i would leave the bastard little bolt well alone imho. Up to you and your wallet though.  :-)

ps before you start cooler make sure you can gets the oil pipes by filter undone first. You WILL need crows feet or flair nut spanner for these, access is a bit ltd. Dont want to get that far only to find the shops are shut or whatever. Hth.

Great response thanks!! Really helpfull.

I'm having this done by a local mechanic but I guess the best solution is to provide the parts and these guides which are amazingly well put together.

The last part of the puzzle is the best place to order up parts. Is this a straight Vauxhall only situation, or is there a better place to look? Automate? Internet?

Thanks again!

At that sort of price, I'd probably get one to keep in garage for that inevitable day...
