What size brakes?
« on: 15 July 2009, 13:47:19 »

I need to replace my front disc's, as i believe they are warped, causing steering wheel judder when braking.

I have been told that there are two sizes of front disc 296mm and 286mm.
My cars is a '98 2.5TD.

Now i have found some people selling discs that state they will fit all omega, both pre and post facelift.  Im getting confused with all of this, can someone clear it up for me?

They seem quite expensive.  Ive been quoted £55 for discs and pads from my motor factor.  Obviously these will be pattern parts.  Would they be alright, of would i be better using genuine parts?

Yes, stick to genuine Vx pads and discs is my advise! :y :y

No idea exactly what you will be getting, but pattern disks have been known to prematurely warp causing issues.

I think some are made with cheap metal, which may be fine on small light cars, but the 1.7 tonnes of omega can be too much for it.

You could very well end up doing the job twice if you use pattern discs. I once went along this road with my Senator (same discs as the Omega) and they only lasted 3/4000 mile before I had problems again. I had to bite the bullet & buy OE disc in the end. Problem sorted!

I had no end of issues with pattern disks, but then I work in Milton Keynes, and am hard on brakes.

Genuine now, no disk problems (still cook pads occasionally though ::))

Stick with genuine Vx amtey.  I jave had loads of pattern disk/pads over the years and the conclusion I have come to is that my life is worth more than a set of cheap disks.

However, I will add the only set I have had from a motor factors have been a set from Apec and are still on my GLS.  If they get changed it will be because of rust issues as the car was Sorned in Decemeber, but saying that my mate move it 2 weeks ago for me as I moved home and he said he could not fault the brakes after they had "cleaned up" a little.

I would agree with Mr Skruntie, I have APEC disks and pads in and they give good feel and don't fade.  I have run them for 12,000 miles now and no significant difference from new, and the wife uses the car and habitually leaves max preesure on the pedal after a hard stop and they're still  not warped!! IIRC they were about 60 quid for the set including the pads.  I have checked them just last week and they are not showing any signs of wear down beyond what I would expect i.e. just about visible, maybe 10-15 though off new.  I will add that I am typically a motorway driver so I brake a lot less than many others, so that may change the view of these.  I have used them in the past on my old two ton Volvo with no problems and similar results.  I got 120,000 miles out of those, and only two sets of pads, so I was happy.  But remember as I said I am mostly a motorway driver, so I use the brakes less, albeit from a good speed when I do!!

Avoid EBC disks and green stuff or black stuff they are lethal when cold and have no retadation at all, and when they're hot they cook the pads and warp the disks.  Bag of c**p IMHO.  Pads smell good when cooking though!!
