Driving to London this morning ABS and TC lights both came up and stayed on.After a few miles speedo stopped working and every so often would jump up to car speed and then die.Pulled over and stopped engine.As I was running late continued and again after a while both lights came on again and as before speedo stopped working.Also noted that steering became noticebly different..heavy but not like failed power unit.
When left office to return home all started fine with no lights and speedo working....after about 10 mins(10 miles )lights back on and no speedo..this was the case for the next 30+miles and then for no reason all back to normal.
Now am assuming it is a sensor so will do a EML flash in morning,but does this sound familiar to anyone and what could be the potential issue?

sounds like your abs ecu has failed 

send it off for repair
or
get one from a breaker, pref same engine and gearbox type

The steering is affected because the steering is speed sensitive ie the faster you go the less assistance you get  .
TC light is also on which is indicative of a fubar'd ECU

Certainly sounds like a failed ECU to me. Which reminds me I have some pictures to add to the howto.

No .... just be aware though that you won't have a functioning ABS system.

Will a flash fault code be a definitive answer to a failed ecu?..or is ther another way short of tech 2 to check this out.
I assume the ecu is within the unit by the pwoer steering reservoir and it is this that requires replacing or sending awy to be refurbished....as I am very reliant on the car for work looks like a known working unit from a same year/model would be the quick fix!

That is right, the ABS ECU is under the power steering reservoir. Quite tricky to access and requires a considerable amount of patience and a good selection of tools e.g. small extension bars of differing lengths. Also worth having some electrical tape handy when you are putting the 6 bolts back in.

there is a how to somewhere on the forum. Lots of us have had to do this job.

You might have to bite the bullet and get alternative transport for a few days as you either
a) need to get your ecu off and then see the part number and get one off a breaker OR

b) get yours off and send it off for refurbishing by return.

Either way you are looking at a few days.

PS I had the same symptoms and tried all sorts of things like changing light bulbs, cleaning sensors but it was the ECU.

The car will drive without the ABS ECU. You'll have no speedo, Cruise, Speed sensitive steering, etc but with care you could use it while the ECU's away IMHO.

EDIT: Meant to say that a Tech 2 or, if you're lucky, cheapo Tech 2, "My Naff Code Reader", etc is the only option for reading the ABS ECU and a symptom of the ECU failure is that it won't respond to the diag. interface.

you have got a stuffed ecu m8 like every has said

as that the only thing that can go wrong and cause all them symptoms

my advice have a search and get the spanners out

 Its a pain in the ass job but can be done

just over 100  quid if you do it your self and get your ecu repaired

falling that just decide witch arm and leg to give up

only watch out for power steering going off as if it was like mine the power steering was intermittent and always decided to go a just the right time
