A good idea gone badly wrong!
« on: 17 August 2009, 01:30:21 »

Some complete git keyed my car on Saturday night , from the headlight right down to the brakelight on the drivers side, the scratches were deepest on the rear door and just above petrol filler cap , scratch removal paste got rid of the lighter ones but not these areas, so i decided get some spray paint from Halfords ( first mistake) and try spraying over the scratch ( second mistake)  ::) didnt go well! you can see exactly where i sprayed and it sticks out like a sore thumb, it looks terrible  :( :-/ Anyone got any idea how i maybe blend it in better , are there any products for this kind of cock up? ( i tried removing it with the scratch removing paste but it made it worse! )or is there anything that will maybe remove this paint? or what you rekon someone would charge to re-spray a door?  :-[ :-[

with very fine wet and dry(1200+), used wet wait about a week then gently rub off the new paint, being carefull to only just remove it and not go throught the laqour if its metalic or paint if it aint. go to vauxhall and get the proper colour touch up pens, put masking tape about 1/2 mm each side of the scratch and touch it up along the length if your car is a straight colour do a few coats till its ever so slight above level, wait a week, but you can take the tape off. then with fine wet and dry, used wet, gently rub back the raised line till level and teecut and wax back till nice. it may not be perfect but can be almost un-noticable if done carefully. and lesson learned dont buy paint from said shop, im sure its mixed after a morning on the thinners. metallic is a bit more difficult but same sort of idea but cover with colour till just below level and use laqour to get just above level. the closer you can get the tape to the scratch i.e the thinner the bit you paint the less noticable it will be. wait a bit other people may have better ideas but ive done it like this in the past and after a while and a few cuts and polishes forgot where it was!

Sounds like good advice, and NEVER EVER EVER buy paint from Halfords!!! ::)

P.S to get the stuff you have just sprayed on off, a gentle bit of T-cutting might do the trick.

Take the colour code from the car as there were several 'star silvers' (the same for other colours) also as well as the pens Vauxhall do very good spray tins of colour and lacquer at good prices.

There are three different Star Silver's and they are not all the same.

Get the paint code of the chassis plate an pop in your local dealer as thet will need to know which one you have.

Be warden though silver is one of the worst colours to match

If not you could try companies like Chips away

Cheers
