Hard Brake Pedal
« on: 14 October 2009, 22:57:27 »

My brake pedal is hard most of the time, I have replaced the vaccuum pipes and the one way valve but the problem is still there although there is plenty of vacuum, when I press the pedal lightly it does sink a bit but if I press hard it doesn't sink at all, could this mean that the servo is at fault, or is it possible that it is something else.

Thanks.

It does sound as though the servo is at fault. Split diaphragm maybe? or perhaps the gubbins inside that controls the air/vacuum has seized.

I won't insult your intelligence by asking if the new vacuum non return valve is in back to front. ;)

Try pumping the pedal half a dozen times with the engine stopped then, with moderate pressure on the pedal, start the engine. You should feel the pedal drop a little. Then turn the engine off and pump the pedal a couple of times. You should get assistance for 3 or 4 pumps of the pedal before it goes hard again.

If assistance is not working then it's vacuum supply to the servo or a fault in the servo itself. If you can feel the servo working then look for siezed caliper pistons, crushed brake lines or perhaps seriously glazed friction surfaces. :-/

Thanks for your reply, I have solved the problem now, it seemed that one of the smaller pipes coming off the one way valve must have been leaking.
