Droning ! Is that usual ?
« on: 14 November 2009, 13:02:53 »

As will become obvious over the next few weeks, I've just got a 2000 3.0 Elite having also got a 2.5 CD which will be up for sale shortly.

My question on this occasion is: Under acceleration and at speed my new 3.0 drones quite a bit.
Its defo the exhaust pipe and seems to be the rear box. Autofit have had her on the ramps with the engine running and say the exhaust system is fine, very good condition in fact...yet she still drones under acceleration.

Is this normal for a 3.0...it doesn't happen on the 2.5 and yet I haven't driven in a 3.0 litre before.

The chap said the rear box MAY be faulty but he thought it unlikely....I don't want to replace it unless I have to.

the noise is only there under acceleration, it disappears when you lift off?

Some of the cheapo backboxes are renowned for their "droning" capabilities under acceleration and at speed.
Had one on mine, sounded like a chavvy exhaust :P

Quite when "lifted off".

VERY interesting comment RobG.  Wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if its a "cheapo box".  Like your "chavvy comment"...right now..Thats me..and i don't like it.

Where should i go for a "non droning version"...he he he

Diff appears fine from my little trip under her this morning. No leakage.  From inside the car, in all honesty it DOES appear to be coming from the rear box.
