Valve Stem Oil Seals
« on: 25 January 2010, 14:40:38 »

Statrted the work on refurbishing the heads from my car today. Valve spring compressor seems to work fine and I have removed one valve. However, I can't see how you remove the stem oil seal? It seems to be "welded" to the valve guide?

Anyone tell me the best way to remove them? :y

Long nose pliers.....twist a few times and then pull.

You can get a proper tool

Thats what I was doing but I just seem to be pulling bits of rubber out so I stopped before I did any damage.

I'll give it another go :y

They're just a push fit onto the cylinder head, but as they'll now be pot hard you might need a bit more persuasion  ;)  ;)  ;)

I used a sharp pointed stainless steel handled vegetable Knife inserted between the steel sleeve of the seal and the valve guide , a couple of taps with the hammer sliced through the sleeve and they fell off with no harm done, except to the knife which was a bit buggered after 24 valves ::)
