Steering Idler issue
« on: 08 March 2010, 19:28:12 »

I've bought my 3rd Steering Idler after experiencing play with two previous. The first was budget, the last two were as recommended by Mark...so should be quality... but there's still play. I can even feel it when I mount the idler by hand...I push it fully on but it doesn't seem to go flush/tight on the spline. When turning the steering wheel I can feel it 'click' because of the play.

I've got pretty mush zero response from the steering when turning the steering wheel about 2cm either side of centre. As I do loads of motorway miles and it's becoming really tiring.  :(

My question is: Could the spline/shaft the idler is mounted on be worn and need replacing? If so, what is it called and are they readily available?

Had the very same problem, I bought a complete 'steering idler unit' ie including the spindle which is bolted to the body, you never know where just the 'steering arm's' are from, good or bad.

Bump -

Anyone know where I can get a steering idler spindle or complete unit (rather not from stealers obviously).

From bitter experience, I don't fit anything other than the genuine Vx idlers as complete assemblies.
Cost is around the 50 quid mark IIRC, but never had any come-back.
Tis cheaper and less hassle in the long run!
