For a bit more info....

I take it youve dropped the gearbox sumps and found bits of thrust washer?  Or are you guessing from symptoms?

its not bad to drop the box, fit new washer and refit box, but I beleive part of the box may need machining flat after a breakage.

Whats the mileage on the box?  may be easier to replace with a 2nd hand box?  and then more doable as no trip to engineering works in the middle.

Yes, there was a broken washer in the small sump. Mechanic or a previous owner removed it some time ago (old gasket was scraped) and probably removed bigger parts.
I guess that the pump and drum are damaged by now and machining will not be the best solution. Apart from that it requires more time so another autobox looks like the best option.
But this can be discussed directly between them (Greg and SImon)
