3.0 V6 Engine cutting out
« on: 12 July 2010, 21:47:55 »

Hello All,

Can anyone give me some pointers on a problem with my 1996 Elite 3.0L please?
115k miles. Engine fully maintained, never previously misfired/stalled and never runs roughly.

These two occurences may not be linked, however....

On a 200 mile round trip last week - all motorway & A-road -  I'm certain I heard a loud knock/thump, with an accompanying momentary judder about 10 minutes into both the outward and return trips. (if it makes any difference, it was quite a warm/hot day)

On the way back I stopped to refuel, and shortly afterwards the engine simply switched off, at motorway speed. I noticed the display screen messaged "AUTOMATIC --------". Unfortunately as the segments have failed I couldn't read the second word.

It turned over normally but no hint of firing, however after allowing 25-30 minutes (awaiting recovery) it started quite normally, and I returned 20 miles or so home.

The next day I went out locally and again it cut out when thoroughly warm, this time when ticking over and once again only fired up once it had cooled a little and/or 25 minutes or so had passed. (No on-screen message this time, and no warning lights).

It looked to me as if the temperature guage was slightly higher than usual so I suspected that at the point it should be switching on the cooling the fans it was shutting off the engine instead, so yesterday (a hot day) I warmed it up fully then opened up the throttles to 1500 RPM with all the electrics running to simulate load, and it ran through around a dozen heating up - fans on - cooling cycles with no problem at all, and no unusual noises.

So, where do I look?

Is there a chance that the Autobox could shut the engine down to protect itself from damage if, for instance, it had some kind of oil flow restriction or blockage? I can't simulate a hot 'box runnning it in the drive, and don't really fancy testing it again on the road if I know it could stop anywhere!

I guess someone's going to have come across this fault, so over to you Folks...

Cheers,

Julian

....I had a feeling somone might say that! Would that generate a purely random pattern of cutting out?

Yes, anytime, anywhere. Very common. If it does turn out to be the crank sensor only buy genuine Vx as the patterns fail regularly.

Great, thanks for the tip on any replacement...I try to avoid my local dealer where possible!

Do I understand correctly - my flash sequence would be 10 10 1 9 ?

No, on a 96my you'd have:-

12 12 12 19 19 19 12 12 12

12 being start/end of sequence :y

You may get 31 aswell as it isn't running, ignore that ;)

Agreed - check codes - money on 19!!  Def symptoms of dodgy crank sensor - replace with genuine Vx - pattern s are krap!!

Sounds like crank sensor, but check for the 19.  Mine did same in France  :-[

If you do get sensor from a dealer, find someone local to you with 'Tradeclub' for decent discount on it :y

EPC has errors when it comes to crank sensors, so ensure they get you right one (certainly post 1998 3.0l take the cheaper sensor, despite what EPC says).

Thanks everyone, I'll follow the advice and let you know. Not bad if that's the first sensor thats failed in 115k.

Appreciate the help.
