Having trouble removing joint on steering idler!
« on: 16 October 2010, 16:41:58 »

Hello All,

The second current problem with my Omega right now is a very worn out steering idler.

I have bought a replacement and tried to remove the old unit. However, It wont come apart. I have tried 3 different ball joint type splitters, the hammer/prybar method and some brute force and ignorance, none of which have done the job.

Will I have to remove the whole lot and do it on a bench or does anybody have a good tip for stubborn steering idlers? I have looked on the forum for an answer to no avail, if there is a thread could someone put me in the right place!

You are not alone with this problem.

When I did mine I applied plus gas (not useless WD40) and then used the time honoured method of two hammers. Hitting both sides simulaneously. I nearly gave up about a thousand times and then bingo it came free. Suggest you try the same.

the secret is a light hammer - it's the sharpness of the shock that does the trick, rather than the weight of the blow
