Hi all,
Bit of a basic this one but I want to change the glow plugs on my 2.2DTI and I cant get the connectors off. They look like plug caps and I can rotate them, so I just pulled and have pulled the top off one of the plastic caps. This makes me think they dont just pull off and I need one of you to confirm that this is how you do it or put me right on removing them.

On the 6 cylinder engines they have a small nut (8mm) to hold the cable on and then a 12mm deep socket to remove the plug itself.

and a diseasal Astra is the same idea.

Mine is a 4 pot and I cant get at any nuts, if there are any until I can get the plug cap looking thing off.

You have to pinch the caps, they are a bit like a child proof bottle if you get my drift

Be careful when undoing the glow plugs from the head as well, they can snap

Oh it's that type! Same as the the later Zaffy's. I can never get those off

Thank you people. I shall make another effort to remove them tomorrow. I dont like the prospect of them snapping. I am guessing this will be the first time they have been removed since new,  104K ago.......

Last set I did were on a 120,000 miler and they came out ok

Use plenty of penetrating oil (proper stuff not WD40) ideally change the plugs on a hot engine.

The glow plugs shear in half at about 35Nm so to play it safe take them out with a torque wrench set to less than this.

If the caps are how I think they are there are some horizontal marks for your fingers. Squeeze firmly between finger and thumb and off comes the cap. Think of it like a clothes peg. The plugs have a huge ring round them that the cap clips onto.

Just done a set on my 165k DTi and they came out alright

New set in and pushed the leads firmly home and the car starts first time now as opposed to 2 mins of cranking 8-)
