As per the tittle really chaps.

I've managed to cut off the chewed up cap of my oil filter canister, removing the very dirty filter element inside in preperation for converting it to a spin-on oil filter.

Inside, attatching the canister to the block is a hex drive. The biggest hex drive that I have is 10mm, which is too small. So in order that I buy the correct size hex drive tomorrow, I just wanted to confirm what size hex drive I will need.

12mm?
13mm?
14mm?

Sorry just noticed your converting to a spin on I nicked some of swmbo's cotton wool buds to soak the oil from the threads in the block then used a bud soaked in celly thinners to remove any oil traces, and you then need to use thread locker on the threaded sleeve,hope it goes ok

Oh, further thoughts on this I've still got a good lid and bolt but a broken filter body so if yours is ok you could have my lid

About the only jobs I can be doing is this, adjusting the handbrake and bleeding the brakes.

The car is starting to do my head in now, so I just want to hurry up, get it sorted and on the road.

Thanks for the tip above Cliff.

Judging by how tight the canister was and the state of the old filter, I reckon the oil hasn't been changed since the Romans were busy nailing Jesus to some wood  which may explain why the canister was so difficult to remove.

Even so, I'd still prefer to use a spin-on filter and already have all the parts needed. Cheers anyway

And one last quick question....

Once the old canister is removed, there is a large rubber 'O' ring that looks like it fits just inside the lip on the engine block.

Before fitting the new spin-on canister, does this 'O' ring need re-fitting? if so then I guess a new 'O' ring would be a good idea?

Sorted. Old 'O' ring not needed.
