Steering
« on: 23 December 2011, 14:34:58 »

Hello all just popped in , been a while since i have been on here but now on my second 3.0 elite "sold my last one and wanted one back ever since" Problem with the steering is it tends steer off center so im moving the steering from left to right to keep in a straight line  :o
My last elites steering felt tight and positive so something not right but where would i start to replace parts to ...im thinking maybe tie rods and bushes , not sure unless some folks here can shed some light on a similar problems.

Thanks all an merry xmas :y

Thought i would add that the power steering seems hard as well , if that might have something to do with it  :-\

First thing to check is play in balljoints, bearings and steering idler.  Check for even tyre wear.

Beyond that, some tyre seem prone to tramlining.

Power steering fluid all topped up , the front tyres seem to have worn on outer edges ...will be replacing these soon . How easy would it be to change the power steering fluid as it looks a bit black  ???

Also, bear in mind the fuses - fuse 14 - and also supplies the cig lighter, heated seats and stuff.  There is an element of electrical assistance in omega steering and could be that this is currently u/s.  Normal cause is a small coin down one of the ciggy lighter sockets.

Outer edge wear is toe issue usually. See handling guide in FAQ.

My PAS is stiff, no idea why. Currently runs on a "one stiffer" setting for servo tronic assistance. By that I mean I can't remember what the settings are, iirc minimum assistance is the usual setting via tech 2, out of 3 options.

So given the stiff pas, TB has increased the assistance by one to the middle setting iirc. Which has helped but there is a side effect, as TB explained it has a slight tendency to Zig Zag up the road on motorways. I can feel the extra assistance come in on occasion so it's working, and there is a very slight tendency to over assist very slight steering inputs at high speed resulting TB's described Zig zag. Although it's very slight in my case, easy to ignore.

So I wonder if the servo tronic assistance has been increased to help the stiff pas, but you have the zig zag side effect as well...?

I guess it's all in the feel through the wheel. If your responding to a pull felt through the cars steering that's front axle issue. See handling guide.
If responding to the car wondering off line but no pull is felt through the steering, rear axle issue. See handling guide.
If the car is over reacting to slight inputs and you have to steer back again to keep on line repeatedly, lower the PAS setting. Or at least see what the pas is set to. If it's already on minimum it ain't that I guess...?

Any of that ring any bells....?

Compensating for slight wander seems to be the problem , when driving in a straight line the car does not pull to either side it just wanders but i can move the steering and not feel enough input to make the car track in a straight line so im over compensating on the steering wheel ...something i know i didnt do on my last elite . With the heavy ish steering im thinking it could be the aid assisted steering not working properly .

Yet to have a look xmas eve an all  :-\
The car is off road awaiting to be looked at but the steering will be the first job to look at .

HBV has arrived thats job No 2 , never done this job but looking at the guide here looks pretty straight forward i hope .

Hbv is simple in theory. It's just bloody fiddly with those stupid clips and access.

Suggest visual examination for play and split bushes etc. If further is needed then tech2 for servo tronic faults or settings.

Although do you think the pas is heavy enough to have failed completely? Is there no assistance at all? Guessing there is some assistance in which case the pas pump should be ok. Is it stiffer at low revs for instance....?

I have checked the fuses and they all are ok it seems, i think the power steering is working but not fully ...difficult to explain but almost certain it should be better than it is . If i get this sorted first the other things that are linked with the steering might not need replaced but i will be checking for worn bushes and stuff also.Might be a good idea to replace the power steering fluid .
On the fuse issue , the rear blind and cig lighter work but not the drivers heated seat  ???that will be looked into at a later date

Heated seat fails on both top and bottom pads as they are wired in series. So a break in the wire means the whole thing fails.

Pas fluid is dex 2. Don't allow a dealer or anyone else to tell you it's dex 3 or otherwise, due to an issue with the pas pipes leaking. DEX 2 Only.

Dex 2 it is then  :y

Im thinking its more serious than i first thought  ::) Hope its not as im ok with basic to medium mechanics , never had a go at power steering set ups ...would not know how to drain out old fluid and replace with new . Dont want to end up taking the car to main dealer for repair and shelling out £££s if i can sort it .

Remove the return pipe to pas reservoir into a jar. Start the engine and the pump will empty the reservoir. Fill the reservoir as it emptys with new dex2 until it runs clearer in colour. ;)
