Cost of replacing glow plugs from a garage 2.5TD
« on: 30 December 2011, 11:33:43 »

Hi guys,

Any ideas what the cost of changing all 6 glow plugs would be (including or excluding the plugs) from a garage. I know I could possibly change them myself but it seems like the intake manifold needs to be removed etc and I don't feel like doing that so only comments about garages/pros doing it please.

Has anyone had this done recently and how much did it cost to have all the plugs changed and did you let them buy the plugs or did you bring your own?

Thanks

Last ones I did was about £45 for plugs (NGK) and completed within my lunch hour, including stopping to make the tea :)

Most backstreet garages are around £50 an hour outside London....

Depends how much practice you've had taking tractors apart and putting them back together (in the rain), I guess. :-X

Well I've only changed them once, about 6 years ago, in 12 years/110,000m so I certainly would not claim any expertise, but I am surprised if you can change them without removing the manifold. ???

Edit: and it was in the garage not the rain!

Manifold off(try not to drop the nuts above the starter lol) you will need to buy manifold gaskets X-6 they cost about £6-8 quid each.
Easy job to take on should take around an hour :y

Manifold off - that takes most of the time, changing the plugs themselves is about 5-10 mins.

I seem to recall you enjoyed it so much, that you rolled around in the puddles for hours? :P

I'm sure I changed mine without moving the manifold... Wobblers and knuckle pieces saw me good iirc... Had to modify a socket with a angle grinder as I was being too tight to buy an injector socket...

:o  That's £36 to £48 for the six.

Top tip: Wherever it was, never get them from there again ! :y

I payed about £8.00 for all six. Admitedly this was almost two years ago, but I doubt the price will have increased that much since then.

If you don't have a local motor factors with reasonable prices then Fleabay has these at £17.11 inc. P&P here:
