Oh how I wish that were true ..... My 2.0 has risen to €660 (£550) this year .
Add to that insurance and it's costing me € 1000 per annum to do circa 3000 miles and that makes no economic sense at all . The Irish government have killed any enjoyment from motoring over here . Damn them , Damn them all

Yup, it makes me chuckle that someone buying a brand new RX-8 pays the same first year tax as someone buying a Maybach at 10x the price..

Hi Guys n Girls, not been on for a while, nice to see the banter has not changed.
 
Had to change the beloved 2.0l when engine needed major repairs, so got misses an 03 plate 2.2, and like a lot of you, was amazed at cost of tax, £240 for 6 months, where my 3.5l bmw was only £118 for six months, mainly because it's a 1989 reg, and thought that was expensive.

Government stitched us up good and tight on this one, goes on the Co2 registered by the manufacturer for that vehicle, not as it should be, what readings are at time of mot.  When we mot'd this one back end of last october, the emissions were a quarter of recommended, which would have put it into 2 bands below.

As Tunnie has said, the Irish is very expensive, and always has been,I have always sympathised with them, my inlaws are Irish and have commented many a time about it, in fact we took a Vauxhall corsa over for a neice early last year, her tax was twice that over here for a  1.0l on top of all the cost for importing it and mot, even though it had an english mot the week before it went over.

i was discussing this today at work,im paying £143 for 6months for my 2.6,to sit in my garage most of the time,comes out once or twice a week for a quick run,how can they band cars for high emissions when it is being used less than most of the other cars on the road,so how can my car be making the same amount of emissions as some1 who uses theirs everyday,ive said it for years,slap an extra 1p on a litre of fuel,and that goes for your car tax,if your a high user you pay more,a light user you pay less,and that way everybody pays it.

That would be too easy, Martin, I agree to paying more on petrol and diesel, it would ensure that everyone pays, no tax dodgers, no paying more for a grouped set rate as is happening, everyone equal.

But that would be too easy and would not bring in the exorbitant monies the government NEED
